One of the main reasons I created LoveBrownSugar was because I saw a real lack of representation for women of color in the fashion and beauty industries. Not only was I tired of seeing the same faces on the cover of magazines, I was also tired of not getting style and beauty advice that fit my aesthetic and spoke to me as a consumer.
With that in mind, I created a platform that would celebrate women of color and the beauty in our diversity. Because of that mission, I truly get excited about any and every project that highlights strides in the direction of inclusion. So when I heard that Corey Huggins, Founder and Global CEO of love, Aunt Bonnie was behind Cosmoprof’s very first beauty showcase geared towards women of color, I was not only intrigued but excited. FINALLY, at a major global luxury trade show like Cosmoprof, there will be an original showcase of the best and brightest in up & coming brown beauty brands.
I don’t share intimate details about my family life here on LoveBrownSugar that often. Most of my family shenanigans can be seen over at BabyBrownSugar or on my Instagram, but I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you all how important my Father is to me during this Father’s Day season. Though I’ve never had a super duper close “BFFs for life” type of relationship with my Dad, I can honestly say I’ve learned so much from him throughout my life. From the way he’s treated my mother and their interactions as a married couple, to his ethics of hard work and discipline, my Father provided a real blueprint for me to be a responsible and hardworking adult with real values.
As I reflect on the important things I’ve inherited from my father, here’s a very short list of 3 lessons my Father has taught me:

If you are headed to the beach this weekend and in need of some ideas we’ve got you covered! Keep reading for our 6 beach-approved makeup tips.

What lead to the founding of BossBride.com?
During my course here as Relationships editor, I get so many relationship books and resources that come across my desk but I often felt like a lot of the information wasn’t necessarily tailored to today’s woman. Concerns are a little bit different than generations before because we have so many more professional opportunities as women today. But having a lot of choices can sometimes be overwhelming, there are a lot more things that are coming for our time. We dream bigger and better than generations before because we have unprecedented access to the life we want. So it’s a passion area for me and as a dating coach a lot of the women I work with are very successful professional women who are looking for that same level of success in their personal life and so that was who my niche was. I was thinking about what do you call her and boss bride came to me. I launched last year.
Who is a Boss Bride to you?
A Boss Bride is a woman who merges the best skills of an effective leader with a woman on her wedding day. She is someone who is a great delegator, who is a team player, who is a visionary. She is a woman who is living in the moment, fully taking advantage of having the people she loves around her and who prioritizes her relationships. You can be single, you can be a divorcee, you can be married for fifteen years and still be a boss bride. It’s a mentality and approach to life that you’re really smart and particular about what’s important to you because you know that there’s a lot on your plate.

It was a cloudy Friday morning and I was heading out to Randall’s Island in NYC for my very first summer music festival experience of 2015. The night before I had gotten my hair done in crochet braids for the first time and unbeknownst to me, the hair didn’t set properly enough to achieve the style I had hoped for. When I took down my flexi-rods and looked at myself in the mirror that morning, I wanted to cry. My hair was way bigger and way crazier than I’d ever seen it and immediately my confidence was shot. I was officially having a “bad hair day”. Not to mention, I was scheduled to take a shuttle bus to the festival with my friends and I was running incredibly late, trying to make fetch happen with what appeared to be a rat’s nest on my head. So I grabbed an afro pick and started teasing and brushing for dear life. I thought about how much fun I was planning to have that day and how excited I was to see my friends, and I tried to put my hair disaster at the back of my mind so I could prepare to head out.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending “The Tamar Collection” launch event at Red Light PR studios in Manhattan.
At this event myself and a group of beautiful bloggers/socialites had the chance to experience the line and chat with Tamar Braxton up close and personal.
Myself & music artist Levine Leavitt
The Tamar collection is an affordable line of sophisticated and trendy clothing for the everyday woman. What I love about this collection is the wide variety of basics that work for an array of occasions. The line is filled with fun clothing and sexy shoes that can be worked into anyone’s wardrobe. When I asked Tamar who the collection was inspired by here’s what she said…
This line was created for women everywhere in all walks of life. We shouldn’t have to spend $1000 on a pair of shoes in order to be fabulous.
We couldn’t agree more with Tamar! Style shouldn’t be defined by a price tag.
This past weekend I attended the Governors Ball Music Festival in NYCand while I was there, I snapped a few street style pics of my look. After going through these images, I realized that I tend to wear the same types of items over and over to my favorite outdoor music festivals like Governors Ball, Made in America and Afropunk, for example. I’m not alone – many fashionable festival-goers pull from the same inspiration to complete their looks.
If you have plans to attend any upcoming summer festivals, here are 5 of my personal music festival style essentials you may want to try:
1. Flower Crowns
The quintessential hippie accessory, flower crowns are always a huge hit. Now that they’re ever-so-popular you can find them in most fast fashion and accessory retailers like Forever 21 or Claire’s.
2. Flash Tattoos
My obsession with flash tattoos started when I applied my first one in the Dove cabana at Governors Ball, but they’ve been incredibly popular for quite some time now. At music festivals, they’re everywhere and so can be considered chic mainstays in festival attire.
Though you should be careful about size restrictions (some festival grounds won’t allow them oversized), backpacks are a growing trend in festival fashion. You can carry all your belongings without slinging them across your shoulder and you’ll still have free arms to wave left and right during your favorite performances. WIN!
4. Leather Booties
These are great all-weather shoe options for an outdoor festival because you don’t know what the weather will bring AND it can get pretty dirty on festival grounds. Sandals are cute but you’ll inevitably end up with black feet by day’s end. You also run the risk of someone turning up a little TOO high and crushing your toes. Play it safe – wear booties.
5. Body Jewelry
Rising in popularity is unconventional yet delicate jewelry I like to call body jewelry. I call it that because it spans beyond just rings, necklaces and bracelets. Some pieces span from your ring to your wrist like the one I’m wearing above. Other pieces hang from your neck to your back. Some even wear the pieces around their head like a crown. Anyway, they’re officially a thing. Especially for festivals.
Once you’ve found that perfect bathing suit to show off your fabulous #summerbody it’s time to find the best way to cover it up. Beach days are followed by fun-filled nights during which bathing suit cover-ups can come in handy. We’ve rounded up the best ones under $100 for you to choose from.
Fringe has resurfaced full force this year but it’s not just for a fun addition to handbags and over the knee boots. Fringe can make for a flattering and comfortable swim cover-up. This over-sized neon pink racer back tee from West & Harlow can upgrade any basic black suit. Check out how Tanesha Awasthi styled her fringe cover-up in the campaign for Old Navy’s latest fringe collection.
The ombre trend is one of those that can be translated to a variety of different styles of cover-up. This short tunic combines the trend with a crochet hem while this maxi dress combines it with the reemerging tie-dye print.
Upgrade your swimwear by taking the shirtdress trend straight to the tide. Classic and clean options like this one from Ralph Lauren can easily take you from lounge wear to nightlife.
Have you picked up a bathing suit cover-up for the season yet? What’s your favorite style?
