I recently had the pleasure of attending Harlem Fashion Row’s Style awards. In an industry that’s known to throw more shade than North West everyone was complimenting and applauding one another with sincerity and encouraging newcomers to join their ranks. It was an environment filled with love and possibility.

How Diverse are Fashion Ads?

With New York Fashion Week coming to an end and Fall 2015 ads making a prominent appearance in all of our magazines, The Fashion Spot could not think of a better time to debut their Diversity Report! With television becoming more diverse by the minute, it makes us wonder has the fashion industry followed in their footsteps?

Behind The Scenes: My Denim Shoot for People StyleWatch October Issue

People StyleWatch_Denim Try-Ons-321

At this point in my 6-year career as a style blogger, I have been really blessed. I’ve been featured in some really amazing magazines and blogs and I count every mention, blog post and feature as an honor. But today, I have to say I am probably my proudest ever because I was chosen to be featured in an issue of People StyleWatch that is so near and dear to me – their Denim issue!

People StyleWatch_Denim Try-Ons-308

We’ve all, at some point, had a love/hate relationship with our jeans. Either they were too small or too big, you found the perfect pair and it made your life easier, your old jeans from the 90’s brought you back to a happy place, perhaps you recently discovered you can still fit into your high school jeans – whatever it may be, denim typically incites some sort of emotional response in us all – good or bad.

People StyleWatch_Denim Try-Ons-323

So when the editors at People StyleWatch asked me about my denim woes, I had ALOT to say. Never did I imagine that answering those questions would lead to something so EPIC as my feature in their Denim Issue. Why this issue is so special to me (and why I nearly cried when I saw myself on the page opener) is because it emphasizes the importance of diversity on the pages of mainstream magazines. I am so PROUD to be representing for the curvy girls with thunder thighs! This issue is filled with beautiful women of all shapes, sizes and colors and it just makes me so happy and proud to be part of the extended People StyleWatch family (via TheOutfit.com).

I went into the denim try-on and after about 6 pairs of jeans, I stumbled onto this perfect pair of skinnies that made me look so slender, fit my thunder thighs to a tee but still played up my best assets. Thank you Rue21 for making denim shopping for curvy girls like me so much easier.

On shoot day, I was delighted to be surrounded by so many beautiful and diverse bloggers – real girls, all there on set to remedy our real denim woes and make it easier for all of you beauties to find your perfect pair.

Anyway, you HAVE to pick up a copy of the People StyleWatch October issue, guys! I’m on page 10, page 103 and page 106. If you see me, shout me out and tag me on social media @LoveBrownSugar on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Love ya! Hit me in the comments section with YOUR denim woes and I’ll try to help!

LBS Chic at Home: Aphrochic Design Tips with Home Depot

Last weekend I had the awesome opportunity to attend an exclusive preview of the Home Depot Closet Chic space at the Essence Block Party. The opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time because in just 2 weeks I’m moving out of my current home and into a new space! Hence, I’m looking for all the home decor inspiration I can get.

Home Depot teamed up with the designers behind the popular and on-trend home decor destination AphroChic to design the ultimate cool-girl’s closet smack dab in the middle of the Essence Block Party. It was decked head to toe in literally all things I love. The closet was painted a special custom color created by Aphrochic at Home Depot via the Colorhouse brand of paint (only available at the Home Depot in Brooklyn!) This color is so me – the perfect merge of pink and purple. It’s like a fashionista’s fuschia. Also Colorhouse paint has absolutely no odor or fumes (which is pretty awesome).

Founders Jeanine Mays and her husband Bryan Mase briefed me on the inspiration behind the closet and the idea was “The Perfect Girl Cave”. From the great pops of color to the explosive prints (the dresses hanging in the closet are from one of my favorite designers Reuben Reuel of DEMESTIKS NYC), I loved everything about the space.

Backstage Beauty: Academy of Art Spring 2016

Just before models hit the runway, we headed backstage at The Academy of Art show to drool over the newest trends backstage in hair and makeup. Hair was provided by Aveda under the direction of Jon Reyman, nails by Patricia Yankee, and Makeup MAC Cosmetics led by Victor Cembellin.

Inspired by the idea of  lived makeup, the look was of  a girl who just came home from a night out. Lead Mac Pro artist Victor goes on to explain that the final look was

A little frayed around the edges that is in a way a little broken down. Very tough young girl with high cheekbones and really highlighted skin. The way that the makeup nomadically migrates after being worn all night creates a really cool effect. DSC_0277
