Dry hair is one of the biggest struggles us naturals deal with on a daily basis. Let’s face it, our hair is prone to dryness, tangles and breakage if not properly taken care of. Unfortunately, that’s just the nature of kinky hair. Over the past 9 years that I’ve been embracing my natural hair I’ve learned a few important tips and tricks that can help keep your hair moisturized.

After experimenting with different techniques I’ve finally created a solid regimen to keep my hair healthy. Outside of deep conditioning, the next most important factor that contributes to retaining moisture is finding a great moisturizer & oil combo that works for your hair type. Keep reading to learn more about 3 of my favorite curl cocktails to combat dry hair.

1. Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie + Jamaican Black Castro Oil

This super hydrating combo works best on very thick textures with tightly defined coils. The “Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie” is creamy and easy to mix with oil.

2. Camille Rose Naturals Curl Love Moisture Milk + Optimum Alma Legend Rejuvenating Oil

This combo will make any natural coif very soft without weighing it down. Both of these products are lightweight and very hydrating.

3. African Pride Olive Oil Miracle Leave In Conditioner + EVOO

These two are a great match for finger detangling. For best results apply this conditioning cocktail on freshly washed hair.

More Tips For Combating Dry Hair

  1. Before you apply any product rinse your hair  thoroughly with cool water to close your hair cuticles. This seals the hair and help bring out your natural curl pattern.
  2. Always apply your moisturizer on wet or damped hair, never apply product on dry hair. It will simply coat the hair and not actually penetrate it.
  3. Always sleep with a satin scarf, bonnet or pillow case!
  4. Co-washing once per week is a great way to restore moisture to your curls.
