3 Reasons To See Dope – The Movie #DopeMovie

DOPE_STILL_029

Last week I had the opportunity to screen new Open Road film “Dope”. Directed by film great Rick Famuyiwa (he directed The Wood and Brown Sugar – classics!) and executive produced by none other than Pharrell Williams, just the production team alone was enough to get me excited about this film.

Top it all off with new and original music by Pharrell and a bevy of celebrity cameos, and I was pretty much sold on the film even before seeing it. I’m sure you’ll absolutely love it like I did. So before you make the decision to go see it (or not), let me give you three convincing reasons to see Dope. Here’s why seeing the film is a good idea:

1. The Celeb Cast

Get ready to see your fair share of familiar faces. Dope (The Movie) has plenty. On top of the plotline involving a menacing drug-dealer who just happens to be A$AP Rocky, you’ll also get to see another (hilarious) side of supermodel Chanel Iman, an undoubtedly perfect performance by Hollywood heir Zoe Kravitz, a quick cameo by rapper Tyga and more.

2. The 90’s Fashion

Nuff said. I always tell people I have 70’s style with 90’s tendencies. If you grew up in the late 80’s and early 90’s like myself, you can’t help but obsess over the style in this film. I mean it’s perfect. From main character Malcolm’s high-top fade to the graphic crop tops, long chains and long braids. Gotta love how fashion is so cyclical. And despite the outfits being a blast from the past they’re actually pretty spot-on for modern day fashions that are inspired by the 90’s.

3. The Hilarious Storyline

The easiest way for me to explain it is that it’s the perfect cross between House Party, The Hangover and Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. It has the authentic 90’s twist, live music and electric cast lineup just like “House Party” (a classic a90’s fave) but it’s a modern day laugh-out-loud comedy of foolish friends like “The Hangover” set in modern day. And the spotlight on main character Malcolm’s life puts me in the mind of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. It’s an overall mix of amazingness on screen. I can already tell I’ll be filing it away as a classic when it releases on DVD.

From the creative direction of the film, to the soundtrack and the amazingly talented cast, this movie will have you laughing hysterically and wishing it was a series and not just a movie. I love it and I’m sure you will too! Dope hits theaters June 19th. Check out the trailer below:
