5 Tips For The Perfect Braid Out

The braid-out is a simple style that can truly transform the look of your curls. This style is perfect for both transitioners and long time naturals. The perfect braid out creates a defined texture that can easily blend your relaxed hair with your “new growth”. Even if you aren’t transitioning, this style is a great way to temporarily change your natural curl pattern. It will elongate your curls and give you more length. Not to mention your hair will be extremely fluffy and soft if done properly.

Keep in mind no two braid outs will look identical. This post is meant to help you achieve YOUR own version of the perfect braid out. So let’s get started!

Here’s What You’ll Need :
Your Favorite Oil
Cleansing Shampoo
Hydrating Conditioner
Moisturizing Deep Conditioner
Creamy Moisturizer or Leave In Conditioner
Styling Gel
Hair Pick

Step 1. Prep Your Hair (optional)

Starting on dry hair, take your favorite oil and apply it to scalp using your fingers. Work the oil in your hair and massage your scalp to loosen any dirt or product. Using circular motions to stimulate your hair follicles. If you’re working with a heavy oil, warm it in the microwave first to make it pliable. This will ensure a healthy scalp clear of flakes and promote hair growth.

Step 2. Cleanse & Detangle

Apply a small amount of shampoo to your scalp and massage gently to create a light lather. Do not cover your hair in shampoo from roots to tips that will only dry your hair out. If you are starting on a old style your hair may be very tangled at this point. Keep calm… that’s what the next part of this step is going to cover. Next, apply a large amount of your favorite conditioner from roots to ends. Using you afro pick or wide tooth comb to remove all tangles and knots from your hair. To prevent breakage work in small sections starting from the back. Once each section is detangled, rinse and move on to step 3.

Step 3. Deep Condition

To prevent dryness apply a large amount of deep conditioner from roots to ends. Apply a plastic cap for 15mins to 30hr or sit under a hooded dryer for 15mins. Remove the cap and rinse your hair with cool water.

Step 4: Braid and Add Moisture

The key to the braids are to make sure they are as smooth as possible. Your hair should be damped and thoroughly detangled. Before braiding add a leave in conditioner and styling gel for additional definition. If you prefer a more voluminous look add perm rods at the end of each braid.

Step 5. Air Dry

The drying process plays a vital part in the result of your braid out. The thicker your hair the longer it will take to dry. I prefer to air dry overnight for at least 7-8 hours. If you don’t have the time simply sit under a hooded dryer for 1-2hours.

Once your hair is dry taking it down is very simple. Simply unravel each braid slowing using a tiny bit of oil to help minimize frizz. Always use a afro pick to fluff the roots. In order to stretch your hair out for a few days pull your hair into a high bun or pineapple at night.
