It’s nearing the close of another holiday season and that means one of two things, quite possibly both: You’ve had guests over for big, extravagant meals and/or you’ve spent the last month attending all those holiday parties, taking full advantage of the break from work. And now, you’re out for the count and not really up for bringing in the New Year on your feet at another never-ending party.
Let’s face it: Getting dressed and going out is not the safest plan on a night like this one. Some of us opt to spend the night in intimate settings, counting down the seconds before the clock strikes 12. So, here’s a list of small but significant decorative tips for closing out 2015 in an epic but subtle way below.
1. Use invitations as decor
Coming together is now easier than ever. You’ve been sending and receiving Evites all season long, seen flyers for ugly Christmas sweater parties via Instagram, and a gazillion Thanksgiving #struggleplates on Facebook. Now, you’re thinking on a smaller scale.
You may want to host a small, intimate gathering for friends or announce the family’s New Year’s soirée in a special way—but really so that no one can say they got the time mixed up. 3. Adorn your foliage
This is the perfect opportunity to be resourceful! This is probably the easiest way to carry out a consistent decorative theme. Use those excess Christmas tree ornaments from your inventory and hang them on your flowers or add tinsel to existing greenery in your home. For instance, I’ve gone around my cactus a few times with some small string lights. This builds on your personality and is a creative way to get into the New Year’s spirit if you haven’t already.

4. Make your home extra cozy
Pull out the extra pillows and throw blankets, and make sure you have a serving tray because most of your indulging will be done while you’re snug in the family room surrounded by those who matter most. Serving trays make it easy to share those classic moments of watching movies together or playing games. Stock up on New Year’s party foods like candied popcorn, mini margherita pizzas, and firecraker shrimp. Or use your tray to serve up some celebratory cocktails. This is also especially great for avoiding messes.

5. Make DIY props
Take advantage of your last moments in 2015 and carve out these DIY props before your guests arrive. Or, make it a group effort and do it together. It’ll make for a great activity between casual conversations and monitoring the time. They also make for memorable souvenirs.
