9 Tips on How to Decorate Brightly Colored Walls Successfully

There’s an entire psychology behind colors and how they influence your mood. And let’s be honest, not all rooms were made for white walls. So, here are 9 tips on what to do before (or after) you’ve decided on a color that best represents you.

1. Begin with a focal point.

Typically you choose the focal point and then build a color story around the central piece in your space. Deciding on the focal point second is a risk but do it anyway! Then it’s off to hunt for the perfect piece of furniture to get an idea of which direction you want to go in next. Find an item that incorporates your paint color brilliantly—a rug, a chair, duvet or piece of art.

2. Create a mood

Wouldn’t you like to greet every morning in a sea of orange as the sun ricochets off of warm walls painted in a roasted squash? Or are you more interested in winding down after work in a calm, tranquil space that promotes relaxation? The mint walls in the photo below speak to someone who has a playful style but is still chill in their approach to life. Your space should highlight your personality, it’s important to create your ideal mood.

3. Dress your walls accordingly.

Bright strokes and a palette that is particularly bold might require less than outlandish artwork or accent pieces. Remember: You’re creating a mood, and you don’t want to over do it! Color adds character to a room. Think of the artwork, handmade wall hangings or wall accessories as something should be noticeable and pretty but doesn’t conflict with the backdrop.

4. Keep cool.

Choose all like colors to decorate with and venture across the cool spectrum with gray, white, black and touches of green. They go great against this soft shade of blue making it an oasis of calm.

 5. Create a color story.

It can be magazines, home decor inspiration or whatever draws you in or intrigues you.  Based on those images, select three paint colors and build a compelling narrative. After you’ve found a main point of interest, those two secondary colors should assist in developing your vision into something you’d anticipate coming home to everyday.

6. Make it an accent wall.

A little splash of color can make a world’s difference. Use one wall to create contrast and promote conversation. It’s easy and it’s not as big a commitment as painting your painting the entire room.

7.  Add a print.

Go for an eclectic look by adding layers with a bold color and print. This will distract people from weird intersections where the wall, windows and ceiling might meet.

8. Choose furniture that is complementary in color.

For this you’ll need a color wheel! Opposites totally attract in this instance. Using this purple as the predominant hue throughout the room keeps the space feeling bold and luxe, but the bold orange accents offer a contrast and energy.
