LBS Chic at Home: Aphrochic Design Tips with Home Depot

Last weekend I had the awesome opportunity to attend an exclusive preview of the Home Depot Closet Chic space at the Essence Block Party. The opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time because in just 2 weeks I’m moving out of my current home and into a new space! Hence, I’m looking for all the home decor inspiration I can get.

Home Depot teamed up with the designers behind the popular and on-trend home decor destination AphroChic to design the ultimate cool-girl’s closet smack dab in the middle of the Essence Block Party. It was decked head to toe in literally all things I love. The closet was painted a special custom color created by Aphrochic at Home Depot via the Colorhouse brand of paint (only available at the Home Depot in Brooklyn!) This color is so me – the perfect merge of pink and purple. It’s like a fashionista’s fuschia. Also Colorhouse paint has absolutely no odor or fumes (which is pretty awesome).

Founders Jeanine Mays and her husband Bryan Mase briefed me on the inspiration behind the closet and the idea was “The Perfect Girl Cave”. From the great pops of color to the explosive prints (the dresses hanging in the closet are from one of my favorite designers Reuben Reuel of DEMESTIKS NYC), I loved everything about the space.

Founder Jeanine Mays and I obviously have similar tastes. We both showed up as twinsies – both wearing Reuben’s amazing romper. I know that when I develop my own space this Fall, I’ll want to include a mix of color and prints but I don’t want it to be overwhelming. So I asked Jeanine Mays for a few tips on incorporating prints into your space and here’s what she gave me:

1. Keep it neutral.

When it comes to adding color and prints to your space, Jeanine Mays insists, “…you want to make sure to offset the bolder pieces by keeping everything else very neutral.” Along with the bold prints and bright closet color, you’ll notice that most of the accessories for the space fall into the white, black and creme family. Neutrals help even out bold prints and colors.homedepotclosetchic-essence

2. Stick with a simple color story.

Adding printed elements can really enrich the space and add a touch of personality but make sure all your pieces remain within the same color story. The Home Depot Closet Chic space was designed to incorporate just about 3 main colors – the fuschia, white and black.

3. Make it cohesive.

If you have multiple colors, make sure your accessories and smaller pieces have hints of the color story as well so the space is cohesive. Everything down to the Demestiks NY pieces selected to be in the space had hints of that fuschia, connecting everything back to their color scheme.

I was so inspired by the space and loved chatting it up with Jeanine and her hubby Bryan. And guess what? Everything (except the clothes and hats of course) is available at Home Depot. I didn’t even realize Home Depot had decor items – so awesome. Home Depot was nice enough to gift me a giftcard so I can purchase a few items to spruce up my own space. Can’t wait to show you guys what I do with it!

In the mean time, check out Aphrochic’s holy grail of a home over at ELLE Decor. Their space is SO beautiful. Even more reason I’ll be taking their advice!
