3 Reasons To Tell Your Unique Story

unnamed

“No one is you and that is your superpower.” We have all read and been temporarily inspired by the meme, but how many of us really believe that what we have to offer is special? Author, blogger, and Power Day speaker Ty Alexander’s story of success, loss, and continuous healing is truly exceptional. By penning her book “Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mom Died” and being transparent with her blog Gorgeous in Grey she has managed to share her story with others that need the encouragement and support of knowing they are not alone. Unsure about why the world needs you to step and share? She’s got great three reasons for you. Check them out below!

1. It’s Therapeutic

I never realized how insanely therapeutic talking through my story could be. Each time I tell it I become more aware of how far I’ve come. When I start with “I slept on couches when I first came to NY” or when I realize I’m saying “I did my first commercial” I’m wowed at my journey all over again.

2. It’s helping others

When I shared that a part of my journey included losing my mother, women who had been through the same experience began to reach out. I realized that it only takes one conversation with one woman to make them change their ideas on death and grief. Sharing my story gave them permission to live independently from that grief. Sharing our stories reminds us that it’s ok to live beyond that story and that story isn’t our only existence in the world.

3. It’s proves we are not alone.

Not only did I realize I was giving women permission to live independently but I was a constantly reminder that they weren’t alone in this. When we are going through the fire it’s hard to see others on the sidelines cheering for us. It’s hard to see that we aren’t the only ones in this race.

bgl-power-dayToday officially marks 7 days until BrownGirlsLove Power Day 2017! I can’t even express how EXCITED about this I am. It’s our 2nd Annual Power Day and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. Don’t believe me? Here are 5 reasons you need to attend #BrownGirlsLovePOWER Day 2017.

stories-love

I’m a storyteller at heart. That’s why I created LoveBrownSugar. To tell my unique story and the stories of other people in my community of beautiful brown girls. So one of the things you’ll experience at BrownGirlsLove Power Day is unique and heartwarming stories from women you admire, speaking openly and honestly about their journeys. From the speakers to attendees, Power Day is a judge-free zone and we get to tell our own authentic stories so we can grow together.

3. The Speakers

bgl-instragram-speaker-flyer

When I say we have some of the dopest brown girls on the planet who will be in attendance at Power Day, I’m not exaggerating. These women are people who inspire me daily. They are the top influencers, expert, business owners, brand builders, editors and more. They are the cream of the crop and they’re ready to dole out information to anyone who’s prepared to listen. More than anything, they’re REAL. These women are authentic and I chose them because I know they won’t sugarcoat. They will give it to you straight no chaser. So be prepared to learn from the best. 4. The Sisterhood

sisterhood-browngirls

By far, one of my favorite things about #BrownGirlsLove events are the bonds that are formed by the women who attend. Some women form new friendships, meet new business partners, become each other’s accountability partners and more. You never know who you’ll meet at a BrownGirlsLove event. But you are, without a doubt, bound to meet beautiful brown girls who are just like you and who want to see you WIN.

5. The Saturday

christina-bgl-speaker-badge

There’s absolutely no coincidence that I chose the FIRST Saturday of 2017 to host BrownGirlsLove POWER Day. There’s something very special about the first week of the year. It sets the tone. It gets you revved up. And if you’re making an investment to be at an empowerment event on your very first weekend of the year, you must mean business. There’s also no coincidence that Power Day falls on the 7th day of the year. Seven is a very special number. It’s God’s number of completion. It means perfection at its core. So don’t sleep on the amazing things that can happen on Day 7 of 2017.

So what more could you ask for in an empowerment event? Have you snagged your ticket to Power Day yet?

3 Tips For Fab Finances in 2017

myfabfinance

We are only one week away from our 2nd annual Power Day! We’ve asked some of our amazing speakers to provide you guys with a few tips to kick off 2017 with POWER! First up is Tonya Rapley of My Fab Finance with 3 Tips for Fab Finances in 2017! Check them out below:

1. Take Regular Financial Assessments

tonya-rapley-731x1024

Start with your first assessment during the first week of the year. That’s a given! But then regularly check on your expenses, and your progress. It’s better to realize that you’re behind on your goals in June, than to let the entire year pass you by leading to disappointment in December. Things you should assess include: your credit score, your purchase categories, your savings, and retirement savings progress.

2. Question Your Spending

All too often we buy out of habit and not out of understanding. I’m not saying don’t buy things. But you should ask yourself questions before you buy. Questions you should ask: “Do I really need this?”, “What purpose will it serve?”, and “Am I buying this to appeal to others or is it a legitimate investment in my goals?”. These questions are helpful in combating unnecessary purchases.

3. Join a Community

Accountability is powerful. It binds you to the relentless pursuit of your goals. When you align yourself with others who are committed to achieving the same goals, a healthy competition and camaraderie evolves that can super-charge your focus. In my Triumph Club, members celebrate each others’ financial successes and learn from one another. While your immediate circle might not be on the same financial page as you, it’s helpful to a be a part of a community that understands your journey.

LBS Reads: Ty Alexander’s “Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mom Died”

tiwinMany stories have been shared of the psychological effects of facing one’s mortality. A woman is diagnosed with lupus and reevaluates her commitment to work-life balance. A man survives prostate cancer and is inspired to become a better father. Less is told of those left behind – the children, cousins, siblings, and friends who are left face to face with their greatest fears and inadequacies when someone they loves is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Gorgeous in Grey’s Ty Alexander recounts her experiences worrying about, caring for, and ultimately mourning her late mother with beautiful honesty in “Things I Wish I Knew Before My Mother Died”. Part memoir, part self-help book, this first effort from Alexander is the perfect gift for yourself or a loved one dealing with grief this holiday season.

Managing a total of 14 brands under the Strength of Nature name (including African Pride Shea Butter Miracle, a proud sponsor of BrownGirlsLove Power Day), her goal isn’t to just merely promote and sell products, but to create and provide women of color with hair products that speak to their personal style preferences. We spoke to the hardworking boss about her role, the diversity of the beauty industry and the keys to making it in marketing.

Name: Charlene Dance

Location: Savannah, Georgia

Personal Style in three words: Professional, Versatile, Sophisticated

Favorite Designer(s): For just everyday/weekend wear, I really like Rag & Bone. I love Tadashi Shoji for eveningwear, he’s one of my favorite designers, and then professionally I love Elie Tahari.

Must Have Accessories: One of the things I don’t leave the house without, and don’t take off is my wedding ring. I’m a sunglasses girl too, so I always have my sunglasses! I have a pair of Roberto Cavalli’s right now that I like. I had a pair of Tom Ford’s that I wore over the summer, that I usually wear on weekends and then I have a pair of very simple Kate Spade sunglasses that I wear on the professional side.
