Cover Girls: Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx For Essence Magazine

ESSENCE Dec Cover

As a child, I remember twirling around my house singing “Tomorrow” in my best Annie voice and pretending I was a mini Broadway star as the VHS (remember those?) played on my TV screen. I LOVED Annie. She had so much hope. She was so spunky and smart. She ended up being rich after enduring hardship. She also had the most beautiful head of red curly hair and I was obsessed. But, unfortunately she looked nothing like me. Annie was a girl I connected with and loved but knew I could never truly portray on a stage because she just…didn’t look like me.

Now, over 20 years later, I am beyond proud and honored to see a young girl who looks like I did when I was a child, representing “Annie” on a global stage! This is such an incredible feat. Essence captured young starlet Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx on the cover of their December issue as the father & daughter duo in the upcoming Sony Pictures remake of the 1984 classic ANNIE. Here’s what Jamie had to say about working with her:

I don’t think we could have done this movie unless Quvenzhané came along. It’s sort of like she’s tailor-made for the role in a sense. I would challenge you to find a girl who personifies ‘Annie’ better than Quvenzhané does… –Jamie Foxx, ESSENCE

What excites me more than seeing this film is that I’ll eventually get to own it for myself on DVD and play it for my daughter when she’s old enough to appreciate it like I was. Only now she can truly feel like ANNIE is a role she can play on stage because of who she sees on screen.

Dazzling actress Lupita Nyong’o is continuing her “it” girl reign in ESSENCE magazine’s March issue. Nyong’o – breakout star of 12 Years a Slave – is featured in the publication’s beauty section. She reveals how she achieves her gorgeous glow and also explains how life-altering her Academy Award nomination is.

“My stomach was in knots,” Nyong’o said. “I broke out in a cold sweat. It was like being on a roller coaster. I screamed so loud when I heard my name and then I started to cry.”

Twelve Years a Slave is Nyong’o’s first feature role, but her chic wardrobe is quickly elevating her to the A-list. She’s been tapped for Miu Miu’s spring/summer advertising campaign, and will also pose for VOGUE Italia.

Cover Girls: Jennifer Hudson Covers Essence January Issue

ESSENCE Jennifer Hudson-Jan

The lovely Jennifer Hudson covers this upcoming January issue of Essence Magazine. She’s got leading roles in hit movies (including recent holiday release Black Nativity), she’s happy in her relationship with longtime beau David Otunga, mother to a beautiful boy and just living life to its fullest.

“I spent my twenties figuring out what I wanted to do, and trying everything,” she says. “But by 30, my foundation was set. I became confident and clear about the path I wanted to take…Now I’ve really settled into myself. And I’m stronger than I’ve ever been.”

People like J.Hud give me so much hope because despite all the tragedy and hardship she’s gone through in life, she has managed to become such a powerhouse. She didn’t let those tragic events define her, which is why I love seeing her celebrated. Kudos to J.Hud on embracing what life has to offer. I think she was a great choice for Essence’s New Year’s issue.

Cover Girls: Kerry Washington for Essence Magazine

image

Kerry Washington is SLAYING on the November cover of Essence Magazine! Aside from the fact that we’re all twirling in circles in anticipation for this Thursday’s season premiere of Scandal, I’m overjoyed to see Kerry Washington gracing the cover of Essence because this has been such an epic year for her.

In the issue, she discusses the importance of playing the role of Olivia Pope and the impact it’s having on the American audience. “They are allowing an educated, intelligent, powerful, complicated, human, flawed, multidimensional Black woman into their homes. They’re not walking past her on the street, they’re not trying to avoid engaging her, they’re not ignoring her and pretending she’s somebody else’s family and somebody else’s problem…”—Kerry Washington, ESSENCE.

I personally think she was robbed at the Emmy’s but she landed her first Emmy nomination, she’s been on countless magazine covers for her starring role, and she even got (secretly) married! Kerry is doing it big.

And can we talk about this dazzling gold look she’s rocking on the cover?? I die!

What do you think of her look? Will you be purchasing this month’s issue of Essence?

Cover Girls: Kelly Rowland for Essence Magazine

ESSENCE September Cover-Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland looks absolutely stunning on the cover of Essence Magazine’s September issue! In it, the starlet & R&B songstress talks about her past battles with self-confidence and the untold stories she alluded to on her single “Dirty Laundry”. About the Beyonce-jealousy controversy, she explained to Essence:

“For a long time I wasn’t happy, but that had nothing to do with Beyoncé,” Rowland says. “That had to do with me trying to get my life in order and make better decisions for myself. I’m seeing all these wonderful things happen for her and I am happy for her. But I want a path. I want things to pop off for me, too. Not on her level but whatever my level is supposed to be.”

I’m beyond happy for Kelly Rowland. I’ve been an avid follower of hers since her Destiny’s Child days, and I’m glad she’s finally come into her own and happy with who she is and what she’s accomplished. There’s nothing better than feeling happy regardless of how people look at you or try to judge you. Don’t you agree?

I must say I’m also INCREDIBLY excited for the Essence September issue because I make a brief cameo in it! Once I have an issue on hand, I’ll share my feature with you guys. Stay tuned!
