Ouidad Curl Immersion Collection – Why All Curls Are Important

Ingredient shot - editorial

Back in March I had the pleasure of sitting on an expert panel discussion with the Ouidad team about the importance of curls and the evolution of curl care. In preparation for the launch of their newest curl collection, the Ouidad team asked me to sit on the panel and share my experience with editors of top publications about the important things YOU all want to know when you come to blogs like mine about taking care of curly hair. I was joined by the founder of the salon chain-  Ouidad herself, as well as celebrity hairstylist Tiffany Daugherty, dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry, Ouidad R&D Melanie Fahey and Ouidad Marketing Director Melka Davis.

Curl Expert Panel2

Ouidad was the first string of luxury salons specifically catered to curly hair and the specific needs of curly hair. And as a result of their success with salon treatments, they’ve developed a line of amazing curl care products that have catered to many different curl types, but now specifically address coarser, kinky-curly curls. My first introduction to the Ouidad line was at a blogger event a few years ago. I came home with a bag full of samples and instantly fell in love with their Cowash Cleansing Conditioner which is a low-poo, super moisturizing, smells amazing and really conditions the hair completely. It instantly became my one-stop-shop cleanser & conditioner in one. It never left my hair feeling stripped like other cleansers and it really made my hair soft & easier to manage.

Ask The Expert: Celebrity Makeup Artist Billie Gene

Spring is officially in full swing! We reached out to celebrity makeup artist Billy Gene for the scoop on spring trends and expert tips for everyday makeup. Billie Gene has worked with celebs such as Keke Palmer, Tia Mowery, and Jennifer Hudson just to name a few. We had the chance to chat about spring trends for everyday women like you and me.

1. What are some of your favorite beauty/makeup trends for Spring 2015?

This season is all about pretty powerful pouts, think Kylie Jenner or Kerry Washington! Keeping the palette neutral and putting all the attention to mouth is the primary focus for achieving this look. Try an orangey red or fuchsia on the lips for a daring look. I also love the focus on skin this season. Using just enough foundation for coverage but still being able to see the skin through it. This gives the face a flawless finish with a healthy glow.

2. What are the 3 makeup essentials every woman should have in her purse/makeup bag?

Every woman should always have a lash defining mascara, a neutral lip-gloss, and a coverage building concealer. With these 3 things at minimum you can conquer the world.

3. Most women of color struggle with finding the perfect foundation shade for their skin complexion. What tips do you have for finding the correct color? What are some of your favorite foundations for your clients?

Foundation shopping can be extremely difficult and I didn’t realize this until a few weeks ago when I ventured out into the market to find some fresh new products. Take advice from the beauty expert but also use your own expertise. First you want to determine your skin’s undertone, look at the back of the wrist to determine if you see more golden tones or warmer tones. This will help a great deal when choosing a color. However, don’t be afraid of buying two shades, sometimes by mixing you will create your perfect shade. Also recognize that your face may also be a few different shades as most African-American women have hyperpigmentation, but have no worries just focus on matching the color that is most dominant on the face.

Some my favorite foundations include Nars Sheer Luminous Glow, Bobbi Brown Stick Foundation and Make up Forever HD Foundation.

4. Highlighting and contouring has been become very popular. What tips do you have for everyday women who want to recreate that look?

Try highlighting only 1-2 shades above your skin tone, you want to keep this looking as natural and effortless as possible. Contouring is great skill for slimming the face and adding more dimensions. When applying this look be sure to diffuse out the line so it will look soft and natural.

5.When working with celebrities like Keke Palmer, how do you ensure that the makeup look stays fresh all day long?

For makeup that will stay fresh and last all day it is very important to primp and prime. These first steps are essential to how the make-up will look on the skin and how long it will last. I’m big on eye cream before concealer; this prevents dryness underneath the eye area. If you’re going for a long wear look I strongly suggest the use of a foundation primer, which is great for hiding pores, fine lines and/or texture.

6. We’ve seen KeKe Palmer rocking a very subtle smokey eye and rosy pinks lips lately. What tips do you have for brown skin women who want to wear pink lipstick? What are some of your favorite brands of pink lipstick?

Keke love’s pink lips!!! When choosing your pink lip, remember that your lip liner is your friend and helps with balancing out the pink especially if you have fuller lips. I also suggest using a brown liner very close to skin tone if needed. Some of my favorite brands that carry pink lipsticks include Lancôme Lipstick Love It, Mac Lipgloss Ample Pink, and Nars Lipstick Catfight.

unnamedheart text

Starting off as an apprentice at a Paul Mitchell signature salon, stylist Seto McCoy is now sharing his coiffing skills with Bravo, WeTv, Elle.com and more. He stepped away from prepping beauty looks behind the scenes of some of your favorite publications to sit on a park bench with us and discuss personal style, professional inspiration, and the power of positivity.

Name: Seto McCoy

Location: Brooklyn, New York

Personal Style: “Unrehearsed, Simple and Grungy”

Favorite Designer(s): I love Nicholas K. What speaks to me about his style is it’s unrehearsed. Every piece is unique.

Must Have Accessories: “A gold watch, my handmade rings from Cassandra Collection, and gauges-I think they’re sexy.”

How do you find inspiration?

My family. Seeing my niece, my nephew, my mom, my dad, my little brother smile and show support for even the littlest things I’ve done is amazing. They’re my rock. My mom actually texted me this morning saying “I’m very, very, very proud of you”. That’s my inspiration.

What do you think is your strongest professional asset?

My creativity. I don’t look at hair as a thing, I look at it as an art. If somebody comes to me and says “I want this hair style” I can do it.

What’s been the greatest moment in your career so far?

All of it. I never take any moment in my career for granted. Each moment is like wow.

Lil’ Mama Talks Natural Hair, Haters & More

This past weekend, LoveBrownSugar.com contributor Kisha caught up with female rapper & America’s Best Dance Crew judge Lil’ Mama backstage at the Global Fusion Festival in Philadelphia.

She was rocking a brand new fro-hawk ‘do (which was quite cute) and we got into asking her about her new style. You may recall that Lil’ Mama recently posted a Twitpic of herself rocking out with a natural ‘fro (see below), which garnered tons of attention when she put it up in May.

She chatted with us about the commentary she received after boldly posting the photo and she had quite alot to say about it.

“I posted the picture of my hair and people were like ‘Omg you look like a shocked slave!’ I didn’t get one comment from a white person about my hair. All of them came from the sisters that had these bullsh** helmut weaves looking like a fake a** Nicki Minaj. They don’t know who they are. And the people they’re looking to for guidance don’t know who they are either, which sucks.”

Aside from going all-natural with her hair, she’s also decided recently to spring for natural nails. She no longer uses acrylic nails. A recent mishap actually led to an allergic reaction and what Lil’ Mama believes was a message from God about being natural, in the form of a blister shaped like Africa. See pic below:
