Cover Girls: Kelly Rowland for Essence Magazine

ESSENCE September Cover-Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland looks absolutely stunning on the cover of Essence Magazine’s September issue! In it, the starlet & R&B songstress talks about her past battles with self-confidence and the untold stories she alluded to on her single “Dirty Laundry”. About the Beyonce-jealousy controversy, she explained to Essence:

“For a long time I wasn’t happy, but that had nothing to do with Beyoncé,” Rowland says. “That had to do with me trying to get my life in order and make better decisions for myself. I’m seeing all these wonderful things happen for her and I am happy for her. But I want a path. I want things to pop off for me, too. Not on her level but whatever my level is supposed to be.”

I’m beyond happy for Kelly Rowland. I’ve been an avid follower of hers since her Destiny’s Child days, and I’m glad she’s finally come into her own and happy with who she is and what she’s accomplished. There’s nothing better than feeling happy regardless of how people look at you or try to judge you. Don’t you agree?

I must say I’m also INCREDIBLY excited for the Essence September issue because I make a brief cameo in it! Once I have an issue on hand, I’ll share my feature with you guys. Stay tuned!

Fierce or Foolish: Kelly Rowland at Elle Women in Music Event

Last night at the ELLE Women in Music event in NYC, Kelly Rowland rocked the red carpet in a white casual tee, leather skinnies, a pink statement necklace, colorful bangles and black & silver high-heeled sandals.

With her blunt bangs and sleek hair, she wore neutral makeup and peach colored nails for a super casual chic look. I’m used to seeing Kelly much more dressed up!

Thoughts on her outfit and overall look? Fierce or Foolish?

LBS Beauty: How To Style Blunt Bangs

Ever since Michelle Obama emerged on the scene with her beautiful blunt bangs pre-inauguration, I’ve been secretly obsessed. Since I’m a curly/kinky girl, bangs are not really an option for me unless I decided to rock extensions.

I think bangs are such a fun way to update your hair look without having to go all the way by cutting your hair off all around. They also frame the face nicely and bring attention to the eyes. I actually used to rock them all the time! Check me out:

Anyway, for those of you brave enough to try bangs on for size, here’s a cool video tutorial I found on how to style blunt bangs via BlogHer TV.

LBS Backstage Beauty: Rip The Runway 2013

Tonight at 10PM EST, BET will premiere its annual Rip The Runway showcase featuring trendy designer collections from African-American designers, and celebrating the style & beauty of people of color. Hosted by Kelly Rowland and Boris Kodjoe, I must say the 2013 show is by far one of the best. I attended the taping and you guys are in for a treat. Aside from fashion-forward collections, there are guest performances by some of the hottest hip-hop & R&B artists out now including Rick Ross, Omarion, Jaden Smith, Sevyn Streeter, and more.

I remember watching Rip The Runway back in my high school days so I was honored when BET invited me backstage to chat with the glam squad that makes the magic happen. Check out what they told me:

Inspiration: The Hair

Backstage the hair looks were sophisticated and understated. Lead hairstylist for the show, Tracy Balan explained “…everything was about elevating the fashion and taking it to a whole other level. It’s more high-end. Think Bryant Park, think Italian Vogue. That’s what you’re getting for 2013. This year, the hair is really simple. It’s all about simplicity and accessorizing your hair to match the clothes.”

About achieving the hair look, Tracy notes “One of the looks tonight is the classic low chignon to the back of the head or the low ponytail. You can easily achieve this with some mousse or a bit of dry shampoo in the roots to lay the hair down but the ends will have more of a wild effect. We also have alot of 60’s mod buns as well, especially in the Size Sexy section. The models are wearing Vivica Fox’s remy extensions line, as one of our biggest sponsors this season.”

Inspiration: Fashion Freedom Segment

Beagy Zielinski, stylist for the Fashion Freedom segment noted “My inspiration for the style looks tonight was Alexander McQueen. I really wanted it to be sexy and edgy with a bit of a dark side. The looks we pulled are everywhere from London to Hong Kong to Lebanon. They’re literally from around the world. So it’s alot of really fun detail.”

Inspiration: Size Sexy Segment

Lead stylist for the “Size Sexy” segment, Lindsay Driscoll told us that this year’s theme was Vogue meet Rip The Runway. “My goal was to have these girls who are plus size (12-20), wearing the same types of outfits as your typical runway model or celebrity. You don’t have to belt everything, you can still wear luxurious furs, and luxe fabrics like leather and lace. It’s about finding the right designers that really tailor their pieces well and finding the right fit and fabrics. So this year we really focused on quality materials and great tailoring to make sure everything looked couture.”

Get The Look: Size Sexy

When I asked about fashion tips for curvy girls like myself, Lindsay mentioned, “…make sure you accentuate the best part of you. For example, if you have really big thighs, wearing a pencil skirt so you can show off your smaller waist while still covering up problem areas is best. Pick your favorite body part and accentuate it. Also, don’t be scared to wear prints or to do color-blocking. If you do it the right way, it works. Not every big girl should have to wear black to look trim. And not every outfit needs a belt.”

Fashion producers of the show Carline Balan & Michou St. Jules says the creative direction of the show was bringing NYFW to BET. “With the element of our stylists and high-end segments like Lux Mode, Jaden Smith’s clothing line MSFTS, Fashion Freedom and Size Sexy. It’s about giving segments for everyone. If you put the entire show together, you could walk through anyone’s life at a particular time.”

“There are so many amazing African-American designers that don’t really get the recognition that they should. So we love mentoring new talent, taking them on and showcasing that. We allow everyone on stage to be their unique selves. That’s why this show isn’t driven by the designers but by the stylists. The designers don’t even know which pieces we chose! They don’t get to see it all together until they come see the show,” said Carline Balan.

Quite interesting! Well I can tell you for sure that they did an amazing job with the show. I ahd a great time at the taping. Make sure to check it out on BET tonight at 10PM EST. Head to the website for more information.

Will you guys be tuning in?

Live From The Oscars 2013 Red Carpet

Similar to the 2013 Grammy’s, we live-blogged our favorite looks from the 2013 Oscars red carpet as they came out. We had a blast chatting celeb red carpet looks with you guys last night on Facebook and Twitter. Here’s a recap of some of our favorite looks. Let us know if you agree!

Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland looks stunning in a Donna Karan Atelier black & white gown. Following the thigh-high split trend, she’s rocking a gown that shows off her amazing legs and her toned arms. This look is a win in my book!

Robin Roberts

Can I say how happy I am to see Robin Roberts back on the red carpet? She’s a Cancer survivor, she’s back and she looks better than ever. Kudos to her. How awesome does she look in this blue velvet gown?

Jessica Chastain

I love how Jessica Chastain exudes Old Hollywood glamour in this Armani Prive gown. It would seem like the color would wash out her pale skin but her vibrant hair color and the red lip makes it all come together for me.

Overall I’m a fan of this dress silhouette for Zoe Saldana. I think it really accentuates her figure. My only qualm with this look is that there’s quite alot going on. From the embellishment up top, to the belt to the colored tiers down below. I think she should’ve chose one embellishment and stuck with it.

Octavia Spencer

Octavia Spencer looked absolutely elegant in a Tadashi Shoji dress. I love how loyal she is to the brand. And she always looks phenomenal! You guys already know I love Tadashi Shoji. I rocked one of his looks for the Essence Black Women in Music event.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence rocked a Dior Haute Couture dress for the big night. I do think this look is a little…bridal. I think the silhouette is beautiful but she might have benefited from a different color. Congrats to Jennifer on winning an Oscar for Best Actress!

Charlize Theron

Another gorgeous Dior gown on the red carpet. In my eyes Charlize Theron can do no wrong. She always looks absolutely flawless. She wore a strapless peplum gown in white, and her brand new pixie cut which flatters her beautiful features so well. Absolutely my favorite look of the night!

Naomi Watts

This assymetrical look on Naomi Watts was really breathtaking. Gunmetal sequins is not something you see often on the red carpet. This dress is by Armani and it fits her to a tee.

Sandra Bullock

See-through and mesh looks were another big trend this red carpet season. I think Sandra looks so sophisticated in this Elie Saab scalloped gown. I wish she had sprung for a bright-colored lip to compliment the look.

Halle Berry

“Halle Berrrryyyyy, Halle Berry!” Everybody sing along now. My jaw dropped to the ground when I saw Miss Halle in this gorgeous look. She’s 40+??? I can’t take. Somebody find out what she’s doing. Because I need to know. This Versace gown is everything!

Jennifer Hudson

Following the thigh-high slit trend, JHud rocked a Roberto Cavalli brocade gown. I really love this dress I just think it’s a little too snug around the waist. Either she needed a good pair of spanx or she needed a dress that had a little more room in the midsection. Other than that, she looks great!

Kerry Washington

Everyone’s favorite Scandal girl, Olivia Po….I mean Kerry Washington…wore a super chic Miu Miu embellished gown. I love the bright color against her skin and the subtle detailing at the top.

Salma Hayek

I’m normally not a huge fan of velvet but Salma has me with a new frame of mind. She looks simply stunning in an embellished Alexander McQueen halter dress in black velvet. Beautiful.

Who were your favorites from the red carpet? Did we miss anyone? Soundoff below!

LIVE 2013 Grammy’s Red Carpet Fashion

This year, we watched the 2013 Grammy Awards red carpet live and soaked up all the fashion and beauty moments as they came across our screens. You guys tweeted us @LoveBrownSugar, followed our updates on Facebook, and checked the site for updates on our favorite looks as we saw them. So here’s a red carpet review of the looks:

Estelle looks stunning in a crop top and mermaid skirt, of her own design. Love this print! She looks amazing and that body is snatched.
She’s giving a smokey eye moment, and a neutral lip. LOVE! She’s also wearing Royal Asscher jewelry – the Gold & Floating Diamond Pendant and the GOld & ceramic floating diamonds ring.

Ashanti is rocking a black & floral keyhole dress with sheer bottom. Not sure how I feel about this one – thoughts?
Ashanti also went with a smokey eye moment.

Chris Brown in all-white-everything.

Taylor Swift wearing a beautiful J.Mendel gown. I love the structure and detailing on this dress. She went with a milkmaid braid and smokey eye to finish out the look.

Wiz Khalifa rocking a Tom Ford suite and a very preggers Amber Rose in a Donna Karan gown. She looks like she’s about to pop!

Adele is wearing a red patterned dress with floral detailing. She’s wearing matching shoes. It’s rather buttoned up, I might have liked to see her in something a little more revealing up top. It just feels like ALOT of fabric. What do you think?

Jennifer Lopez slays the red carpet yet again in an Anthony Vaccarelo gown with a thigh-high split, and Tom Ford shoes. Daring! And I love her sleek top knot, it’s the perfect compliment.

Rihanna looked stunning in all-red-everything on the red carpet. She wore an Alaia gown, and completed her looks with a red lip, a subtle smokey eye and vampy red nails. For hair, she rocked soft, romantic waves with honey blonde highlights.

Katy Perry showed a fun, yet sophisticated look in a seafoam green Gucci Resort 2013 gown with keyhole and beaded detailing. I love her long, voluminous flowing locks.

Beyonce showed up to the 2013 Grammy’s in a black & white Osmand Yousef Zada pant suit look. She rocked a bold red lip,  jeweled cuffs, and peeptoe stilettos to accessorize.

Kelly Rowland showed a little skin (and her amazing body) in a Georges Chakra gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Janelle Monae went with her classic tuxedo look. She rocked a red lip and red nails courtesy Covergirl, for which she’s a spokesperson.

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beats showed up elegantly clad – Alicia in a cutout dress with leather detailing. And Swizz wore a classic gray suit.

Last but not least, Solange wore a green Ralph & Russo couture gown. She accessorized with neon peach pumps and an oversized ‘fro.

Thoughts on the red carpet? Who do you think killed it?

LBS in LA: Essence Black Women in Music Event

“I’m going going back back to Cali Cali….”

Yes yes y’all. Biggie-style, I’m headed back to LA! As you’re reading this, I’m probably boarding the plane with a turban on and my overnight bag in tow. I had to get this announcement out before daybreak though – I couldn’t hold back my excitement!

The Essence Black Women in Music event, taking place tonight, Wednesday February 6th will honor new musicians and style stars Solange Knowles and Lianne La Havas. Hosted by Grammy winner Kelly Rowland and Essence Editor-at-Large Emil Wilbekin, the two honorees will perform live sets for the occasion.

I’m beyond excited to attend as a special guest of Lincoln, who is the presenting sponsor of the event. Lincoln’s all-new luxury midsize sedan, the 2013 MKZ, and the luxury full-size sedan, the 2013 MKS, are the official vehicles for Black Women in Music and will chauffer both songstresses to the red carpet. This is the fourth consecutive year that Lincoln and ESSENCE have collaborated for this chic invitation-only affair. I can’t BELIEVE I’m getting the opportunity to attend!

Follow me at @LoveBrownSugar on Twitter and Instagram for up-to-the minute updates about the event. I’ll be live-tweeting my entire trip including snaps of the red carpet, interviews, celebrity run-ins and last minute fashion & beauty choices before the big night. As of now, I’m still undecided on a dress! Got my shoes though, whoop whoop!

Join me on my second adventure to LA! I’ll be tweeting live updates with hashtag #LincolnRedCarpet – wish me luck! (praying I don’t hyperventilate when I run into my girl Solange)

NEWS: Destiny’s Child Releases New Album

Ok so I don’t usually do this but umm….Destiny’s Child is back y’all! I never really post about music news on LoveBrownSugar but I couldn’t hardly contain my excitement. Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams are joining forces once again to produce new music!

When I saw Beyonce’s Facebook page announce that for the first time in 8 years, the group that made her would be releasing new music, I nearly fell out Baptist-church style. I tootsie rolled. I raised the roof. I did the butterfly. It was a moment. See screenshot below:

I’ve been a dedicated Destiny’s Child fan since childhood. I grew up on their music. As in, as a Junior High School kid I skipped class to head to the FYE store in midtown NYC for their “Survivor” album signing. Waited on line for 7 hours and then proceeded to cry when Beyonce shook my hand. Yeah, that dedicated…

The album is set for release on January 29th, 2013. It’s available now for pre-order at Amazon HERE. The album’s title is “Love Songs”.
I mean, I can’t wait. I’m still tootsie-rolling.
Is anyone else a DC Fan like myself? Will you be ordering?
