Growing up I went through a few different phases discovering what I wanted to be “when I grow up”. For the longest, I just knew I wanted to make babies feel better and be a pediatrician. I liked the idea of making people feel better. Then, I thought I wanted to be an entertainer. I loved dancing and singing in the children’s choir, so I assumed fame and my name in big lights were the way for me.
As I grew and developed my interests and started getting actively involved in school activities, I realized I really liked to lead. I was bossy but I knew how to do it in a nice way hah! After contemplating the life I wanted to live as an adult, I discovered that business and entrepreneurship is what I really wanted in life. If I could just create something that helped people, that tapped into my business mind and my creative mind, and made me feel amazing everyday – I’d be happy. So I went off to study business at The Wharton School at UPENN and I graduated with a mission of creating something for myself, that would help people, provide for my family and make a difference.
After years and years of struggling with fitting my circle self into a square peg, I’m finally at a place where I feel like I’ve tapped into my calling. I LOVE writing and creating for you all here on LoveBrownSugar.com and for my chic moms over at BabyBrownSugar.com. But what I love most about my career and my day to day is connecting dope people with other equally dope people. I unconsciously have been doing it for years. And now, instead of sitting on that talent, I’m channeling it into a business that I co-founded with my good friends and colleagues Jessica Andrews and Lexi Felder.
Last week our business Style Influencers Group (also the powerhouse behind the #WeAreBlackHistory project) was featured in what I consider to be the holy grail of business journals for me – Black Enterprise. Writer Essence Gant interviewed the three of us on the creation of Style Influencers Group and I am just so humbled and honored that they see promise in us and in our business.
I’m on the list! Wow, I have to say this is truly a dream come true. I put on my Vision Board last year that I wanted to be on a 30 Under 30 list and here we are with 2013 coming to a close and I’m on somebody’s list!
Huge THANK YOU to the lovely editors at Hello Beautiful for always supporting me. Just this summer, they featured me in an editorial about How To Wear Floral Shorts, so it is an absolute honor to know that they consider me a “Style Maven” under 30.
I’m also really humbled to be considered among the other amazing movers & shakers on this list. If you’re at all interested in the fashion & beauty industry, I implore you to get to know some of these women – everyone from business owners to bloggers, editors, stylists and more.
I’m so honored and flattered that the editors at Hello Beautiful have found me to be stylish enough to feature in their 5 Ways To Wear feature! Because I’m obsessed with prints during the summer time, I opted for the floral shorts look. Floral shorts can be tricky but if you follow a few basic rules of thumb, they’re pretty easy to pull off. Here are the first few looks:
I’m honored to say the least. They asked me to choose some of my absolute Fall 2013 must-haves and among them were a peplum dress, printed skinny pants, a bright colored clutch, a name necklace and metallic booties. It was SO hard to choose between all the amazing items but overall I’m so happy with the spread.
Make sure you head to newsstands and pick up a copy of this month’s ESSENCE Magazine. Let me know if you like it!
Guys, today is such a proud moment for me. Since Black Enterprise first began their annual Black Blogger Month series, I’ve been a close follower as some of my absolute favorite blogs were featured and highlighted. I never thought that just 4 short years after starting my own site, I would be one of the faces gracing this series. I am SO humbled and honored. This has to be one of my proudest moments to date.
Below is a snippet of the intro to the article. They made your girl tear up! Reading this was like hearing “You iz kind, you iz smart, you iz important…” over and over again a la “The Help”. Deep sigh.
Fashion has always pumped through the veins of Queens, New York native Christina Brown. It’s that passion for all things style and beauty that led the now 26-year-old editor in chic to serve as senior fashion editor of the widely recognizable campus glossy, The WALK, during her undergraduate days at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Brown didn’t stop there, she spent her summers learning the ins and outs of the fashion industry, interning at luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue, and the ropes of the digital marketing field at BET.
As part of Black Blogger Month, BlackEnterprise.com caught up with the style aficionado to discuss her blooming brand, lessons learned from four years of blogging and why LoveBrownSugar is a sweet online destination.
Guys! One more bucket list item checked off my list! Yesterday, I was featured on GLAMOUR Magazine’s website. Beyond elated that the editors at Glamour saw it fit to include me in their roundup of “Cold Weather Outfit Ideas You’ll Want To Steal” from their favorite bloggers.
The lovely girls over at Lovelyish.com were nice enough to do a feature on me for their “Diary of a Fat Girl” series. I was both honored and flattered that they chose to spotlight me as a plus-sized fashionista. Special thanks to Jen for the feature! Be sure to check it out over at Lovelyish…
Here’s an excerpt from my interview:
Lovelyish:You’re obviously rocking it and your confidence is killer. Would you say that blogging affects your self-esteem in any way? Would you recommend it to others who may be on their journey to self-acceptance? Christina: I definitely think it’s an awesome self-esteem boost. It’s one thing when your close friends tell you they love your style, but getting comments about my fashion choices from fellow bloggers and/or complete strangers from around the world gives me such an adrenaline rush! I think posting your looks takes a bit of confidence in and of itself because readers could always criticize you or leave negative comments. But once you’re brave enough to post and you get positive feedback, nothing feels better.
Lovelyish:Your looks are always executed flawlessly. I especially loved the outfit you wore in your entry “Platforms & Playgrounds” – the bold shoulders, the edgy accessories and those amazing lace-up booties – just perfect! But what I want do know is… what does a casual, just-running-to-the-grocery-store outfit look like for you?
Christina: For casual looks, I normally opt for simple pieces with really amazing details. I’m obsessed with leggings so it would most likely start there. I have a few amazing pairs from H&M that have zippers on the sides which I think is a cute trendy detail for a staple. Depending on the season, I’d probably throw on an oversized tunic, a jeweled statement necklace and whatever flat shoe I’m obsessed with at the moment. My current shoe obsession is the Jaya Jelly Sandal from DVF (http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/60522). They’re so cute and they remind me of my childhood days!
