LBS Runway Report: Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2014

Christian Siriano - NYFW CollageFew designers are willing to evolve season after season, especially when their signature aesthetic elicits audible gasps and other sounds of delight from fervent audiences. Christian Siriano is shattering that mold. The Project Runway-alum is committed to elevating his fashion instincts, even as his success sends entertainment’s elite – like Maisie Williams (who better slay!) and June Ambrose – to his front row.

Maisie Williams (Photo-ArturoOlmos)In his 12th season (I still can’t believe this!) on the grandest fashion stage, Siriano let his clothing speak. Each piece had its own unique language. The Marsha Brady-esque sophistication of the 1960’s spoke through a gorgeous green coat that was paired with an adorable a-line skirt.

We were also privy to the 1950’s, where boxy, but simple silhouettes reigned. A palette of pea greens, dazzling golds, pristine silvers and deep purples cascaded down the catwalk on everything from crop tops to monochromatic suits.

Siriano’s evolution was evident in his cohesive collection, but old habits are difficult to break. As is customary, he sent several towering gowns down the runway, including a mouth-dropping silver gown that draped beautifully over model Anna Cleveland. It was slinky, chic, and definitely served the creativity Siriano fans are accustomed to.

Christian Siriano5 - NYFWCombining retro-and-modern looks is a difficult task, but Siriano executed it by injecting a modern aesthetic on blouses and pants while causing nostalgia with pill-hats and disco-ball shimmers. This is a collection designed for bold fashionistas who believe risk-tasking is vital.

Models donned nude lips and sleek ponytails, as is common on multiple runways this season.

Now, will I be able to afford an item in Christian Siriano’s collection? Of course not. But a girl can dream, and incorporate the church hat into my standard wardrobe. I’d also recommend playing with vibrant colors; investing in loose, but structured silhouettes; and stepping outside of your fashion comfort zone.
