Drop The Dryer: Mini Twists Tutorial

This week Nikita of My 12 Month Natural Hair Challenge is breaking down “The Process” and “The Product” of doing mini twists on her natural curls. Mini twists are no small feat. Check out how she breaks hers down: [CONTINUE]

I decided I wanted to try mini-twists out because I figured that they would last longer than regular twists. I was not only right about that, but I was also really happy with the fact that they seemed to have more movement and allowed for cooler styling.

Mini-Twists take a long friggin’ time. Like I’ve said before, I don’t have thick hair, but it sure is dense and it took me at least 3 hours to do my hair. I know I watched a lot of episodes of something. If you’re going to do these, I suggest you catch up on Scandal or Girls at the same time. Hit two awesome birds with one stone.

The Process

I washed my hair and combed it out (with conditioner in it) while in the shower. I went through my usual moisturizing routine (Tea Tree Leave-In conditioner from Pro-Claim, Coconut Oil, Mizani Textures Moisture Stretch, Shea Butter) and then sectioned my hair into 8 sections.

What I added to my arsenal of hair products this time was Organic Root Stimulator Twist and Lock Gel. I LOVE it! My mom had it at home, I tried/stole it, and then bought one of my own. I just put a little on my fingers and ran them over the piece I was going to twist. Then as I neared the end of the twisting process, I would add a little more on the ends for hold.

After everything was twisted, I did bantu knots to protect and curl the ends as some of you suggested.

The Product

Tight curls that look great on their own, with a headband or a hat.
You’re ready for the day!
Have you ever tried mini twists? How did your results turn out?
