Get Like Me: Singer Tiffany Evans

feature with text

Appearing on the scene at the tender age of nine singer Tiffany Evans is now a young music industry veteran who traded in her “Promise Ring” for the titles of C.E.O, wife and mother. Currently running an accessories line and preparing for the release of her new E.P., she carved out some time for us to discuss business, family, and why it’s never too late to learn.

Name: Tiffany Evans
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Personal Style in 3 words: Sexy, Laid-back, and Cool.
Favorite Designer(s): I respect fashion but I just wear whatever I feel it could be Givenchy or from Target.
Must Have Accessories: I love bucket hats and my company Eye Hunee recently started selling ours. I always have to wear them everywhere. I’ve always loved hats. I always find myself carrying one and a pair of shades.

You’re a solo artist how does teamwork play a role in your day to day?

Teamwork is very important. Anybody working towards a goal whether you’re an artist or dancer, actress, whatever, you’re going to need people on your team to help you put it all together. I really believe there’s no such thing as doing it all by yourself. Someone out there believes in what you’re doing and has to help you bring it all to life and that’s what my team does for me.

How has marriage and motherhood affected your career?

Having my husband around, involved in what I’m doing, is great. He creative directed my video for the song “Baby Don’t Go”. My daughter goes everywhere with me. She’s seeing a lot and she’s learning a lot. It’s made the whole journey even more beautiful and just worth all of the pain and the hard work and the struggle. You’re doing it not only for yourself but for your family. You don’t feel alone at all because you have a family that’s looking out for you and they’re there every step of the way.

What inspired you to release your mix-tape 143?

I was pregnant with my daughter at the time, I was just recording my emotions. I said “I’m recording this music, it’s vulnerable and it’s where I’m at right now let me just share this”. I decided to name my project 143 (which means “I love you”) and dedicate it to my fans.

How has your experience as an entrepreneur differed from your experience as a singer and actress?

Music is something that I was born to do. It’s second nature. With eye-wear you’re stepping into a whole other lane. It’s about learning and taking what you’ve learned and applying it to your business. You have to do tons of research on your audience. A lot of retailers don’t really target diversity in high fashion but Eye Hunee is for anybody. If you love anything that’s attractive Eye Hunee is for you.

What three pieces of advice would you give an aspiring singer?

  1. Work hard
  2. Never expect anything from anyone
  3. Don’t be afraid of paying your dues

What three pieces of advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur and sunglasses designer?

  1. Keep an open mind
  2. Do your research
  3. Always be willing to learn

What advantages do you think you have as a young entertainment industry veteran?

When you know how things work you don’t run into a lot of problems because you know what to do and what not to do. Having been in the industry for twelve years, I’ve been able to receive a lot of information and take it with me.

What’s the biggest difference you’ve noticed about the industry since you started at nine?

It’s social media driven. A lot of these social media platforms weren’t here when I started out. So you have instagram, twitterfacebook and all of those are platforms for you to showcase yourself. Nowadays anybody can get online. I think that’s really amazing! If you know how to utilize that platform really well you can really become successful.

What’s the hardest part of your job?

For Eye Hunee it’s making sure that you’re coming up with ideas people will like. I think that’s pretty hard. Just because you think it’s dope doesn’t mean anybody else will. Every time you design something you’re taking a risk. Musically it’s hard dealing with egos, they can get in the way. Sometimes people make a process hard when it doesn’t have to be and they can mess it up for everyone involved. I hate that.

What has been your greatest career setback to date?

I don’t think I’ve had a setback. At least I don’t look as it as a setback. I was signed to Columbia for ten years and I parted ways with them in 2010. I thank God for how it’s all playing out. It’s really organic now, and I’m happy.

What can we expect next from Tiffany Evans?

We have the EP dropping in May and right now I just released my new single “Red Wine”. It feels good, that’s so important to me. The way that you make people feel is going to get you to the places that you need to be. If you stay consistent in that area it’s going to get you really far. Right now we’re preparing to shoot the video in the next week or so. I want to act more very soon also, that’s another one of my passions because it’s so expressive.

What’s in your handbag right now?

My driver’s license, my lip gloss, the key to my mom’s house, my mascara, different kinds of lipstick because I like to switch out throughout the day and gum.
