How To Add a 90’s Touch To Your Wardrobe (Inspired by #DopeMovie)

90s-style-from-dope-movie

So I’ve raved about my obsession with new Open Road film “Dope Movie” in my 3 Reasons To See “Dope”, The Movie post. And my #2 reason was the 90’s fashion featured in the film. Being a late 80’s baby, I so distinctly remember growing up in the 90’s and developing my sense of style at a young age when shows like “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “Clueless” were popular. Even though the 90’s are over (teardrop), they still live on in my heart and sometimes in my closet. Though I’m a flowy dresses and sparkly flats kinda girl with a few LBD’s on the side, I also like to switch it up and wear 90’s inspired fashions for various occasions like dance parties and weekend fetes. I also inevitably get invited to a 90’s-inspired party at least once a year.

1. High-Waisted Denim

An easy way to add a touch of 90’s to your wardobe is by rocking a pair of high-waisted denim. Whether it’s denim cutoffs or baggy jeans, high-waisted denim is a hallmark of the 90’s era and a must-have for recreating any 90’s looks. I still remember gushing over Aaliyah’s high-waisted jeans and bra top look when she was popular back in the late 90’s. In Dope (the movie), characters like Diggy rock baggy high-waisted jeans and crop tops for the look (see #2).

2. Crop Tops

This is a must for 90’s inspired style and it just happen to be a current fashion trend. Any type of crop top from an undersized tank top to cutoff tee will work. Just make sure to pair it with baggy denim for the full effect.

3. Oversized Sweatshirts

In the Dope film, main character Malcolm rocks a purple oversized sweatshirt I loved. This is an easy and attainable way to add a little 90’s to your look. You can find them pretty easily at a local thrift store and also stores like Urban Outfitters and Nasty Gal have plenty of options to choose from.

4. Graphic (Everything)

Anything with a bold and bright-colored graphic on it can pass for a 90’s style mainstay. Graphic fitted caps are a must. You can also spring for graphic and cartoon-printed leggins if you want to go the extra mile.

5. Box Braids

It’s not a real 90’s look for us girls if you don’t add in the proper hair. 90’s hair looks were undoubtedly made up of long box braids and twists. Think Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice. So if you want an instant way to get the 90’s look, spring for a protective style like box braids or senegalese twists. Zoe Kravitz’s character in Dope, Nakia, wore them well. She reminded me so much of her mother (Lisa Bonet’s) old 90’s character Denise Huxtable with this look. Suddenly I’m 90’s nostalgic. I’m off to scour the internet for old school MTV Pop videos and “Clueless” reruns.

How do you feel about 90’s style? Love it or leave it?

Not sure yet if you want to see Dope Movie, yet? Watch this trailer. You will, trust:
