LBS Runway Report: Lacoste Fall/Winter 2014

Lacoste - NYFW CollageCamp sites, mountain trails and other outdoors activities aren’t often considered ideal spaces for chic fashion attire. We tell ourselves we should value comfort over style when we’re walking, kicking around a soccer ball, or enjoying the treats Mother Nature offers. Lacoste’s fall/winter 2014 collection tells us differently. Sporty can be fashionable, especially when alterations are made for comfort.

Lovelies, I am no outdoors-woman. However, I’d pack Lacoste into a travel bag if I were headed to a region where protection and comfort were as important as fashion diary entries. Models glided down the catwalk in slouching oversized sweaters that seemed plucked from their boyfriend’s closets. These cozy winter go-tos were offered in an array of prints, including a colorful argyle and charcoal-gray stripes. Pairing sweaters over loose-fitting jeans and swaying mini-skirts provided a versatility I’m accustomed to seeing when considering outdoors-wear.

Lacoste’s collection is designed for winter. Waterproof zippers, tailored pea coats and thick-cut hoodies are essential additions for ice-fishers and others that need their clothing to serve as impromptu shelter against the winter elements.

Lacoste - NYFWThere’s an architectural edge to the boxy and straight-lined offerings on Lacoste’s runway. This isn’t accidental. Creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista’s muse was the Basque region of France, where he visited and photographed the Chantaco golf course. Seeing the leisure of golfing culture meet the historic architecture of Chantaco led Baptista to envision Lacoste’s collection as a piece of art.

It is definitely that. Minimal makeup and windswept tresses are trends this season, and Lacoste continued it. Models donned few accessories. Several wore handbags, but none of them were remarkable.

No Lacoste show is complete with a celeb-packed front row. Joe Jonas, Jesse Metcalf and several other teen stars gawked at the collection, and I definitely understand why.

Kudos to Lacoste for creating an unforgettable collection that will surely introduce them as a viable option for all fashionistas.
