LBS Runway Report: LaQuan Smith Fall/Winter 2014

LaQuan-Smith-Fall-2014-CollageManhattan’s Lincoln Center is considered the absolute center of New York Fashion Week. It is abuzz with fashion editors and bloggers decked in their trendiest digs, celebrities seeking inspiration for red carpets and a mixture of vendors, coordinators and other couture enthusiasts. Yet, we’re in a fashion season where Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, and a series of other elite designers defected from Lincoln Center in favor of intimate venues in several boroughs, including Brooklyn.

Enter LaQuan Smith.

The burgeoning (and very charismatic) designer attracted entertainment’s elite – like the Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Dwight and Beyoncé’s styling guru Ty Hunter – to the center of Manhattan for his fall 2014 collection.

Amid the thumping beats of Pusha T, Smith unveiled a fall collection fit for a professional woman with as much interest in her social life as her career. Forgoing the traditional catwalk in favor of a more intimate showing, Smith’s models posed with pizzazz, sass and tons of personality. Their confidence definitely mirrored the blaring sound of Beyoncé crooning “I woke up like dis.”

Smith’s aesthetic is still developing, but his vision is stronger this season. His focus on mixing and laying separates, including this chic lace bra and pencil skirt, sells the idea that fashion isn’t reserved for the meek. Skin was bared – under mini-skirts, floor-length crochet dresses, and siren red cocktail gowns – but was also preserved under tailored coats.

Sticking to a traditional fall palette serves no purpose, but Smith diversified his collection by incorporating reds, laces, crochet and a number of other eye-popping details.

LaQuan Smith’s show was one of the best I’ve attended this season. It offers working-girls, like me, an opportunity to electrify our wardrobes.
