There’s something so beautiful and regal about the color purple. Not only is it the actual color of royalty but when I wear it, I feel so empowered and special. That’s why when my fellow Penn alumnus Ashley McFarlane, who started this fashion line Asikere Afana, told me she would be sending me this Zhara dress ($160) in purple, I was ecstatic.

From the moment I saw her first few pieces in production, I knew her line was destined for greatness. Not only are the designs super dope but they incorporate ankara fabric (my fave) and they come in these beautiful and vibrant colors like magenta, purple and green.

One of the things I always fear when ordering a piece made from this fabric is that the design won’t fit. Often these fabrics don’t have much give, so one inch or two makes a huge difference in whether the piece is flattering.
What I love about her designs is that they are so flattering for curvy girls like myself.
The bell sleeves on this dress and the A-line/full skirt make for the perfect fit for curvy girls with hips, thighs and everything in between. It’s also for every girl starting at size XS and going up to size 4X.

You guys all know how important it is to me to support entrepreneurs of color so I’m really proud of my girl Ashley for following her dreams and starting this line.
