LBS Runway Report: Rebecca Minkoff S/S 2014

Rebecca Minkoff is a genius. The iconic creator of the “I Love New York” tee has mastered jazzy accessories and handbags fit for most occasions, but her Spring 2014 collection left me more awestruck than all of her previous attempts.

A penchant for infusing the beauty of culture with the coolness of fashion led Minkoff to an unlikely muse: Bianca Jagger. “It all started with this image I found of Bianca Jagger on Andy Warhol’s farm in Montauk in the 1970s,” she told StyleList. “I started doing research on her pre-disco glam days, and I found these incredible images of her in Nicaragua in the 1970s, and I just became obsessed with Latin American culture.”

Please transport me to the 1970s and set me loose in Jagger’s closet! From vibrant embroidered patterns to the rich palette of mustards, teals, grays and whites, Minkoff delivered a spring 2014 collection fit for a Latina queen.

If these pieces are any indication of spring trends, it’s clear that your leather pieces shouldn’t be tossed in a box for Goodwill. One of my favorite pieces was a pristine leather jacket in the perfect mint green. I was also enthralled with the simple insertion of flowers on loose-fitting pants, blouse collars, jackets and tees.

Minkoff’s collection screamed casual chic. I could see a celeb – like Louise Roe, Olivia Palermo, Jessica Lowndes and the others piled in the front row – donning one of these creations while thrifting at a trendy boutique in Los Angeles.

Like the other stunners before her, including BCBGMaxAzria, the designer incorporated the everlasting mixed print. Stripes were paired with embroidered skirts, sporty sweatshirts complemented by mini-shorts.

Legendary painter Frida Kahlo was channeled on the catwalk. All of the models donned gorgeous, intricate braids pulled into a bun, coiffed by TRESemme lead hairstylist Jeanie Syfu, and complemented with barely-there-makeup.

At heart, Minkoff is still an accessories designer. Her first love was omnipresent, appearing in the peep-toe gladiator boots on the models’ feet, bags lined with floral print and a to-die-for red backpack. Accessories were the spark in this show.

If accessories were the spark, Janelle Monae was the explosion. The pint-sized crooner serenaded the crowd with cuts from her forthcoming LP, “The Electric Lady.” Decked in her customary black-and-white garments, Monae served face, hair and pizzazz.

After the show, she summed up everyone’s feelings when she told a report, “I love Rebecca’s collection, it’s really great.”

It is great. It is bold. It is the reason I will forever stan for Rebecca Minkoff.

So, here’s the scoop: Your spring wardrobe should be loud, vibrant and fun. It should scream bold, carefree chicness. Rebecca Minkoff will have it no other way.
