It was a cloudy Friday morning and I was heading out to Randall’s Island in NYC for my very first summer music festival experience of 2015. The night before I had gotten my hair done in crochet braids for the first time and unbeknownst to me, the hair didn’t set properly enough to achieve the style I had hoped for. When I took down my flexi-rods and looked at myself in the mirror that morning, I wanted to cry. My hair was way bigger and way crazier than I’d ever seen it and immediately my confidence was shot. I was officially having a “bad hair day”. Not to mention, I was scheduled to take a shuttle bus to the festival with my friends and I was running incredibly late, trying to make fetch happen with what appeared to be a rat’s nest on my head. So I grabbed an afro pick and started teasing and brushing for dear life. I thought about how much fun I was planning to have that day and how excited I was to see my friends, and I tried to put my hair disaster at the back of my mind so I could prepare to head out.

Fast-forward to the moment I stepped onto the bus that morning and my friends greeted me with big smiles. “That hair! It’s beautiful!”, said one. Another assured me “Big hair is in! We’re going to a festival, you’re going to fit right in.” All it took was a few reassuring words and hearing the first few notes of live music on stage at the festival that day to liven me up and let my guard down. Once I finally put a smile on my face and a little shimmy in my shoulders, I got compliments about my hair left and right and I really had the time of my life that day – big hair and all.

I said all that to say, confidence is in the eye of the beholder. When you have a smile on your face and a dance in your soul, nothing can take away your confidence – not even big, frizzy hair. It also doesn’t hurt to surround yourself with positive friends who will give you the jolt of confidence you need when you’re feeling low.

  1. Oh that’s an easy one…. just waking up each morning healthy and happy gives me the confidence I need to get my day going. Being over 50 and not waking up to any aches and pains is such motivation to keep exercising and going strong. @goddesslily on Instagram

  3. I live with confidence by helping myself along with others around me! I excuse positivity in my daily walk and I enjoy making a difference in others lives:) While working as a teen life coach for girls I LOVE seeing their face light up when they accomplish at least 1

  4. Im in the “fake it til you make it” phase of rebuilding my confidence. Years of depression led to weight gain, isolation, and a loss of confidence. I am learning to live with confidence by wearing my heart on my sleeve, being transparent, remaining true to myself, taking better care of myself (mind and body), repeating positive affirmations, meditating, embracing myself as i am, while preparing myself for the future. Some days its easy, other days its really hard, everyday its worth it.

Thank you for this post Christina. (My first crochet weave experience was similar so i feel your pain. Im glad you didnt let ot ruin your day)

  6. Your confidence story is very uplifting, Christina. I am so glad your day turned around like that. Answering your question about living life with confidence, as you said, it is all about surrounding yourself with positivity and all of the other activities that make you happy. Knowing my self worth, I stay confident by setting goals for myself and assuming that there is always a reason for everything. I do my best to stay humble and to always be kind to people. Part of being confident shows when you can also make someone else feel good about themselves by giving a compliment or helping with any other endeavors outside of your own. As humans, we do not feel confident everyday but I think the key to staying along the lines of self assurance lies within embracing whatever comes your way and handling it to the best of your ability. That is what I live by. I hope this helps and is insightful to someone. Good luck to everyone going for the $50 gift card.
