My Hairstory with Head & Shoulders Moisture Care Collection

I still remember running around my house as a 6-year-old with a t-shirt over my head, pretending to have long flowing hair like Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” or Princess Jasmine from “Aladdin”. Those were my favorite Disney characters but my tightly curled hair was a far departure from theirs.

Fast-forward a few years to third grade, and finally my mom gave me a relaxer. It was an at-home relaxer kit for kids and she did it right at our kitchen sink. I felt like such a boss at school the next day with my flowing straight hair. No more painful styling sessions. I was relaxed and you couldn’t tell me anything!

Nearly 15 years later, during a transitional phase in my life and career when I was headed off to start college at UPENN, in a completely new city where natural hair was actually embraced, I decided to go natural. And that time period came with its own fair share of struggles.  I shared a bit of this over 4 years ago right here on LoveBrownSugar in this post called Introducing Cece’s Curls.

Like many, my hair history is laced with issues of embracing my texture, emotions over feeling beautiful with straight and/or curly hair and it also includes an aspect of my career that was greatly affected by my hair. That’s why today is such a special day for me. I’m so proud and honored to partner with Head & Shoulders to share a bit of my hairstory with you all.

I like putting both words “hair” and “story” together because our hair really does have a strong reflection on our personal identity and our history. At least it does for me.

My hair represents alot of who I am as a person, it’s a reflection of my personal style and also often connects directly with my emotions and my self of confidence. Alot, right? That’s why it was so impactful and empowering for me to share.

Check out my video below:

I grew up in a household where Head & Shoulders could always be found in the shower caddy. My Dad still uses it religiously to control his dry scalp and dandruff issues but I personally never thought I could use it myself. I was just averse to using anything my Dad could use. If it didn’t come in a pretty bottle or tout yummy ingredients like coconut or shea butter, I wasn’t even trying it. Head & Shoulders was my Dad’s shampoo, not mine.

When Head & Shoulders sent me their newest Moisture Care Collection I was really intrigued to try it out. It has ingredients like vitamin-E rich almond oil and also coconut essence (it smells pretty great, too). Also what some people may not know about me is that, like my Dad, I frequently struggle with dry scalp. Those dry scalp issues are only exacerbated by the fact that I wear protective styles so often. Weaves, wigs, braids, twists – all those styles can leave your hair susceptible to dry and irritated scalp if you don’t take proper daily care of it.

My favorite product of the collection is the Moisture Care Scalp Soother. I remember when I used to wear box braids, I’d reach for this popular “braid sheen” spray to help keep my scalp moisturized. This is like an updated version of that. It has a refreshing tingle and it is perfect in-between washes when you’re wearing a protective style . It’s also great for just quick scalp refreshing on the go. I haven’t seen many other companies with a product like this, specifically for soothing and moisturizing just the scalp, so this has really become my go-to.

Overall, I’m just really honored I was able to share my story. My reason for creating LoveBrownSugar.com in the first place was to be a space to share my experiences with style and beauty openly and to hopefully help someone else who may be struggling with similar issues whether it’s embracing your curly hair, your curvy shape or just your natural beauty.

This was a pretty big step for me so please feel free to leave your own stories, experiences and thoughts about the video with me in the comments section. Thanks as always for being such a supportive community! It means alot to me.

This post is sponsored by Head & Shoulders. As always, every and all opinions I’ve expressed here are my own and not those of the company.

  1. This is awesome! I had no idea that Head & Shoulders was making a line for textured hair. This is great because from time to time, I have scalp dryness. The video was amazing too. I have a very similar story also. Can’t wait to check out the new line.

  2. Love hearing your hair story and learning about their new line. Must give it a try. PS. Your hair is POPPIN in that video.

  3. Great story! I’ve had to deal with severe dry scalp before and flaking. I remember heading to the store to get some head and shoulders. It’s nice to see they have some with moisture now.
