Red Carpet Countdown: Golden Globes 2014 Red Carpet

golden-globes-red-carpet-2014Last night’s 2014 Golden Globe Awards brought out the A-listers in film & TV rocking some of the best (and worst) ensembles I’ve seen in a good while. Overall, I have to say I was underwhelmed by the red carpet. There were, however, a few standouts that I have to mention, and a few mishaps that should never happen again (sigh).

Here are my top 10 best & worst looks from the Golden Globes. Let’s start with the good stuff:

BEST DRESSED

5. Olivia Wilde

Considering I’m a fellow prego, I have to give props to a woman with child who manages to looks this stunning on the red carpet. Kudos to Olivia Wilde for complimenting her baby bump with a monochrome green Gucci gown that sparkles and flatters her belly beautifully.

4. Mila Kunis

Ok so I may just be obsessed with sparkles and sequins but am I the only one who thought Mila’s Gucci dress was absolutely gorge? When she stepped up to present at the awards, my jaw dropped. I don’t normally like grey muted colors but this is amazing.

3. Sofia Vergara

Sofia-Vergara-Golden-Globes

Sofia Vergara has straddled the fence on my best-dressed lists for years. Sometimes she’s a hit and other times a miss but she was definitely overwhelmingly a hit at the Golden Globes last night. I love this classic black gown on her and the fact that her beautiful Lorraine Schwartz statement necklace was the center of attention and not her…well…bosom like usual. Well done Sofia!

2. Kerry Washington

Kerry-WashingtonGolden-Globes

Kerry Washington is obvi one of my fave red carpet mainstays always. Now with her adorable new “accessory” aka her baby bump, she’s even more stunning. She wore a delicate custom Balenciaga gown in a nice winter white color with delicate structuring and a long flowing silhouette. She looks simply beautiful. Congrats to her & hubby!

1. Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita-Nyongo-Golden-Globes

Lupita Nyong’o might be a newcomer to the Golden Globes red carpet but last night she rocked it like a PRO. I mean, can you get anymore stunning than this? The color of this Ralph Lauren gown looks beautiful with her skintone. Her hair & makeup are flawless and not too overpowering. And what a statement to show up your first year in a structured dress/cape moment. I mean. LOVE!

Now onto the disappointments. Take a deep breath…

WORST DRESSED

5. Julia Roberts

Julia-Roberts-Golden-Globes

I am usually ALL IN for Julia Roberts, especially in a pristine black & white moment. However, last night’s ensemble was a sore disappointment. Her dress & shirt look made her look way too matronly. Also, where’s your body Julia? We know how snatched you are but this ensemble does not show that off.

4, Gabourey Sidibe

Gabourey-Sidibe-Golden-Globes

You guys know I’m always here for a plus-sized fashionista rocking it on the carpet. This look on Gabourey could actually have been a hit had she not missed the mark with making sure that the dress was seamless (literally). In her midsection, I can see that she’s not wearing any spanx or slimming undergarments to get rid of the little lumps that draw attention away from the dress. For that reason, I had to declare this a miss. We’re rooting for you Gabby, but we desperately need you to make sure you’re wearing the proper undergarments.

3. Drew Barrymore

I’m also always here for a prego rocking the red carpet. I’m 9 months pregnant at the moment. I know the struggle! Hence I have two pregnant beauties on my best-dressed list above. But Drew Barrymore last night was an example of what NOT to wear when you’re sporting a baby bump. Though she was glowing, her makeup was flawless and the overall silhouette of the dress wasn’t bad, I was sorely disappointed by those 3D flowers popping out of her dress. They made her look BIGGER. Totally unflattering. Pregnant ladies, take heed. Slimming, tailored fabrics are your friend! Not 3D florals.

2. Paula Patton

Oh Paula. I think you are so adorable, you have an enchanting personally and you usually look amazing on the red carpet. But this dress right here, honey? It’s swallowing you up. This is not Paula Patton wearing a dress with an oversized ruffle. This is a dress with an oversized ruffle wearing Paula Patton. Sorry, can’t do it.

1. Zoe Saldana

Zoe-Saldana-Golden-Globes

Zoe normally gives me SO much life on the red carpet. So it follows that is with deep regret that I have to place her on my worst dressed last night. I’m all for taking risks, but this dress looks like an art project. It’s just…not good. There’s nothing more I can say.

Thoughts? Do you agree with my list? Who would you have included here?

  1. Lupita for the win no contest! I think I like Kerry dress better from the side?? Also, I thought Amy Poehler’s dress for the red carpet was great.

And the worst was Zoe for me as well. Too many ideas happened all over that dress.

    1. Agreed Kerry’s dress looks even better from the side! I actually didn’t see Amy’s dress, I have to check hers out.

      1. Margot Robbie perhaps? Kerry looked very average to me, and that dress looks like it could be from Macy’s. I guess I expected more.

  2. Have to disagree with you about Gabourey. She does look awful, but I don’t think it’s a lack of shape wear or necessarily wearing the wrong kind. I’m a size 20 and wear shapewear, but not once have I ever found a cure-all, hide-all for my gut. She’s bigger than a 20, so I think the problem is really the dress… That is not a dress appropriate for her body.

    1. That’s definitely a good point about the shape of the dress. What I do think is working for her is the v-neck and the beading at the empire waist because it brings the focus up to her face as opposed to downward to her midsection. But you could be right, perhaps it’s simply the fabric or the cut of the dress. Either way, shapewear always makes a difference – size 0 or size 20.
