The cool air during the fall and winter months can really do a number on your kinks, coils and curls. Extreme cold weather can rob moisture from your hair leaving it dry and brittle. Here are a few tips to help combat dryness and retain moisture in natural hair this fall.

1. Conditioner Boost: Make sure your conditioner is creamy and moisture rich. Look for products that contain oils such as olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil and avocado oil. If you preferred to make an at-home conditioning treatment adding ingredients like honey or glycerin to the mix will keep your hair hydrated throughout cold weather conditions.

2. Always Seal Your Hair With An Oil: Once the conditioner is washed out and you’ve applied a moisturizer, you must seal your ends using some type of an oil. Check out our favorite curly cocktails here.

3. Switch To Sulfate-Free Shampoo: Sulfates are harsh cleansing agents that strip the hair. By switching to a shampoo that is sulfate free, your hair will feel clean with out feeling dry.

4. Always Wear A Satin Bonnet Underneath Your Winter Hat: Although it may be freezing outside and you’ll want to wear a hat to stay warm it’s extremely important that you protect your hair underneath. Most winter hats are not made of materials that are gentle on natural hair so it’s very important that you keep it protected by wearing a satin bonnet.

5. Wear A Protective Style: From two strand twists to a sew in weave, there are countless options when it comes to protective styling. Once you’ve found a style that is appropriate for your texture and lifestyle, commit to it from anywhere to a week to three months. Make sure that during this time you are still treating your scalp, washing your hair if necessary and providing some form of moisture at least a few times per week.

6. Hydrating Mist: In addition to moisturizing and sealing a great way to maintain moisture on a daily basis is by simply mixing your favorite leave- in and a few drops of oil into a spray bottle. Spritz this mixture on your hair morning and night for a quick moisture replenishment. This is perfect for those lazy days when you don’t feel like co-washing your hair. Doing this daily will keep you hair hydrated especially during the fall & winter.

7. Deep Condition Weekly: We can not stress this enough! Deep conditioning is essential in maintaining healthy hair. You may be tempted to skip a treatment every once in while, but don’t do it! Create a solid regimen and stick to deep conditioning for at least 30 minutes per week. Natural hair gets dry very quickly and cold weather is only “fuel to the fire”. Keep your strands happy and healthy by using a creamy conditioner after you shampoo.
