This year’s Met Gala theme was punk inspired. Despite having an out-of-the box theme to adhere to, celebrities showed up to the red carpet clad in everything from baroque to bazarre last night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Check out my top 10 favorites below:
10. Taylor Swift in J. Mendel
There wasn’t much chat about Taylor Swift’s look but upon e-browsing I stumbled on her Met gala look and thought it was absolutely stunning. I love that the dress is dark but the clever mesh detailing makes it lighter. I’m also a fan of her smokey eye look and slightly messy hair. Punk yet chic.
9. Solange in Kenzo
Solange was her regular classy, elegant yet fun & eclectic self. Of course I’m OBSESSED with her oversized afro. The bigger the hair, the better in my book. And I love how her dress leaves a bit to the imagination with the thigh-high detailing and keyhole.
8. Nicole Richie in Topshop
I have to applaud Nicole Richie for fully committing to the punk theme and for becoming a style muse with this Met Gala look. Although silver strands are not typical, she somehow managed to pull it off without a hitch. Even bolder? Gracing the red carpet in Topshop. Straight bad-a** and I love it.
So Queen Bey is no stranger to Givenchy. She donned the design house at last year’s Met Gala as well. Contrary to popular disapproval, I actually was a slight fan of this look on Beyonce. There are two things she must lose for me to love it though. The belt and the boots. It’s overwhelming the look.
6. Rooney Mara in Givenchy
Rooney Mara slayed in this custom Givenchy gown. She looks like a dark angel with the scalloped gown in stark white and her bold purple lip. The makeup, the hair, everything was just right.
5. Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney
Cameron Diaz is another celeb that was under the radar at the gala but I thought looked absolutely beautiful. Her Stella McCatrtney looks was an eye-catching cobalt blue with a structured cape and a metallic studded belts for punk effect.
4. Sarah Jessica Parker in Giles & Philip Treacy Headpiece
Oh Carrie, how I love thee. In case you forgot how glamourous Sarah Jessica Parker can be, she reemerged on the red carpet at the Met last night to remind you. SJP was glowing in a Giles printed gown and a Phillip Treacy head piece. I thought this was not only a beautiful gown but that she really committed to the the punk theme as well. And anyone willing to don a headpiece that massive, gets extra cool points.
You guys know I stan for Kerry Washington. Olivia Pope can do no wrong. I thought this Vera Wang dress was a beautiful selection and her smokey eye and neutral lip were a perfect compliment. She accessorized with long leather gloves and sleek straight hair.
Now THIS is punk glamour at it’s finest. Anne Hathaway normally floors me with her red carpet choices and last night’s Met Gala look was no exception. I loved the subtle mesh detailing of this gown and the fact that it’s a 1992 vintage piece makes it all the more fitting. Anne fully committed to the look, even dying her tresses bright blonde for the occasion. She hit the nail on the head with this look.
I was so blown away by Jennifer Lopez look last night! The #1 spot for me was pretty close between J. Lo and Anne Hathaway. Lopez looked amazing in a body-hugging Michael Kors gown. I love the pattern and how it coincides with the punk theme and I LOVE her mohawk-inspired hair. She always manages to kill it on the red carpet.
Did I miss anyone? Who were your Met Gala faves?
“I’m going going back back to Cali Cali….”
Yes yes y’all. Biggie-style, I’m headed back to LA! As you’re reading this, I’m probably boarding the plane with a turban on and my overnight bag in tow. I had to get this announcement out before daybreak though – I couldn’t hold back my excitement!
The Essence Black Women in Music event, taking place tonight, Wednesday February 6th will honor new musicians and style stars Solange Knowles and Lianne La Havas. Hosted by Grammy winner Kelly Rowland and Essence Editor-at-Large Emil Wilbekin, the two honorees will perform live sets for the occasion.
I’m beyond excited to attend as a special guest of Lincoln, who is the presenting sponsor of the event. Lincoln’s all-new luxury midsize sedan, the 2013 MKZ, and the luxury full-size sedan, the 2013 MKS, are the official vehicles for Black Women in Music and will chauffer both songstresses to the red carpet. This is the fourth consecutive year that Lincoln and ESSENCE have collaborated for this chic invitation-only affair. I can’t BELIEVE I’m getting the opportunity to attend!
Follow me at @LoveBrownSugar on Twitter and Instagram for up-to-the minute updates about the event. I’ll be live-tweeting my entire trip including snaps of the red carpet, interviews, celebrity run-ins and last minute fashion & beauty choices before the big night. As of now, I’m still undecided on a dress! Got my shoes though, whoop whoop!
Join me on my second adventure to LA! I’ll be tweeting live updates with hashtag #LincolnRedCarpet – wish me luck! (praying I don’t hyperventilate when I run into my girl Solange)
Last Thursday evening, we had the pleasure of attending the Anu Essentials
launch event at chic Brooklyn-base natural hair salon Khamit Kinks
. Despite the frigid weather outside, the venue was filled with warm smiles and chic ‘dos.
Anu Prestonia is “the” go to natural hair guru with a clientele roster beyond anyone’s wildest imagination. From the one and only queen of daytime television Oprah Winfrey, to Stevie Wonder, and talented triple threat Solange Knowles, she has tended to some very famous tresses. The event was hosted by Ms. Anu herself and some very familiar faces from the natural hair community, the ladies of Curly Girl Collective. and Renae Bluitt of In Her Shoes.
are an array of organic natural hair products made paraben & sulfate free ranging from shampoos, conditioners and so far our favorite is the Soft Set Gel ($22.00)
. Did we mention she has a natural perfume line as well?! Chemical free!
As her mother kindly put it “A little goes a long way, a dab on the neck, your inner elbows, and on your knees if you got a man”. With words of wisdom from her natural hair journey and all the gratitude expressed, Anu Prestonia is indeed an inspiration to all the ethnic beauties out there.
Rock your fro loud, rock your fro proud! Keep on the look out for a product review on Anu Essentials right here on LBS.

Solange Knowles is on an epic roll this month. She’s been spotted giving us glam red carpet moments, singing & dancing all over South Africa in her newest video “Losing You” and now as a precursor to her upcoming album’s release, Solo graces the November cover of ELLE South Africa.
Dubbed “Fashion’s New It-Girl”, the songstress and fashionista is seen sporting her favorite attire – mixed prints! And of course the curls are abundant and she’s rocking a statement lip.
Don’t you love this look? Can’t wait to see the full spread!
UPDATE (10/15): See behind-the-scenes pics from Solange’s full spread below!
Solange Knowles was spotted last night on the red carpet at the premiere of “Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007” rocking a faboosh tailored pink suit, a black & white geo-print turtleneck top, Nicholas Kirkwood slingbacks and a Charlotte Olympia Union Jack clutch.
For her beauty look, she went with her classic ever-growing ‘fro and a punchy red lip!
She’s giving me updated 70’s chic.
Thoughts on this look? Fierce or foolish?
Steal Her Chic With These Staples:
It’s here! Last week we gave you the Behind-The-Scenes look at Solange Knowles‘ newest video “Losing You”. It’s finally here and it doesn’t disappoint. Aside from the insane fashion moments, her amazing hair, and the cute guys, Solo’s newest video definitely re-establishes her as the musical force we first came to know her as.
Directed by (my fave director!) Melina Matsoukas, and styled by Solange and super stylist Ty Hunter, with contributions by ELLE South Africa Fashion Director Asanda Sizaniwas, there are moments from some of our favorite designers including DVF, Kenzo, J.Crew, Suno and more. Can we talk about this orange suit she’s rocking above? I mean, she just gives so much life. Don’t take my word for it though.

Happy New York Fashion Week folks! It’s been a busy week. So much so that I almost forgot today was Monday! Here’s what I’ve been getting into since NYFW started.
– I attented the Lucky FABB conference last Wednesday which was an amazing start to my NYFW. I got to hear from influencers like Rachel Zoe and Lauren Conrad. I also ran into some of my favorite fashion & beauty bloggers. It was a blast!
– Fashion’s Night Out 2012 was a night to remember. Best part? Hearing Solange Knowles DJ live and sipping cocktails at my favorite designer DVF‘s store. Two of my faves under one roof? Priceless.
– My necklace is here! A few weeks ago, I ordered this @LoveBrownSugar necklace from Shame on Jane and it arrived right on time for Fashion Week! I’ve been getting so many compliments. LOVE it!
– Yesterday I co-hosted a NYFW Social Women brunch with Angela Simmons and Yoli of Yoli’s Green Living. Pics from the brunch coming soon! It was a blast.
Make sure you’re following me on Twitter @LoveBrownSugar
and Instagram (username: LoveBrownSugar) for all the up to the minute nonsense I’m involved in this week. @ me so I know it’s real!
Until next week!
Looks like Solange isn’t the only one who loves bright yellow! Beyonce was spotted in Paris this week rocking a full on sunshine ensemble in the city of light. Queen Bey headed off to lunch in Paris wearing a complete Surface to Air ensemble with Prada shoes. I love a monochromatic look when it’s done right.
Thoughts? Fierce or foolish? Would you rock all yellow?
Last night Solange Knowles (my fave) showed up rocking a fashion-forward ensemble at the MoMa Garden Party. In a leaf-printed Flaminia Saccucci shorts and skirt hybrid, Solange rocked the party with a rhinestone clutch and nude classic pumps. Eclectic, fashion-forward, yet sophisticated.
Thoughts? Would you rock an ensemble like this? Fierce or Foolish?
Last night I was invited to the flagship opening of ASH footwear
boutique in Soho. A luxury shoe brand originally launched in Europe, ASH opened it’s very first store on US soil in downtown NYC last night. The event was hosted by two of my faves: Refinery29
& Solange Knowles
Located at 44 Mercer St, the ASH boutique is a special place housing numerous shoe styles from their spring & upcoming fall collections.
I’m in love with their skilfully crafted wedges and their handbags are to DIE!
Of course I had to chat it up with my fave fashionista and host of the evening, Solange Knowles.
Solange was decked out in a DVF dress and ASH sandals. She looked absolutely fab.
The man behind the magic, Solange’s stylist Charles Wade, was in attendance as well. Charles and I used to work together at Honey Mag – he now resides in LA. Love him! Profile on his career coming soon to LBS.
I also ran into chic fashion blogger Taliah Ferguson from FashionWasHere
. She recently won the Ebony Magazine + June Ambrose twitter contest and scored a free turban from June’s line. Love her style!
Taliah’s equally fashionable friend showed up in a printed crop top and accordion maxi skirt. Love this boho chic look.
My fave publicist Sandrine Charles went downtown chic in this rose colored jumpsuit from Urban Outfitters and the American Apparel oversized leather clutch that seems to be the “It” bag of the season.
On-site attendees were treated to champagne by Nicholas Feuillatte, canapes by the Bubble Lounge and hair braids & feathers by Whittemore House.
How cute is Michelle King from Seventeen Magazine in with her hair braiding and feather?
All in all, I had a great time! Had fun with old friends & new ones, sipped on cocktails and had a ball gazing at the eye candy all around (the shoes!). If you’re in the NYC area, be sure to stop by the ASH flagship store on 44 Mercer St. If not, you can find them online and follow them on Twitter @ASHShoes.
