On Saturday February 13th curly girls of all colors, shapes, and sizes came together to celebrate Texture on the Runway. The lively fashion week event, held at City Winery, was a chance for attendees to gush over each other’s curls, kinks, and coils.
Texture Media, the company behind top curly girl resource NaturallyCurly.com, has shown consistent commitment to highlighting different types of beauty and that commitment was illustrated once again during this amazing event. Read more about #TextureOnTheRunway below.
Attendees including Taren Guy, Jessica C. Andrews and Africa Miranda milled around the room checking out the latest products from sponsors including Garnier, Curls, Cantu, Dark and Lovely and Creme of Nature who provided each guest with a sample of their new pocket sized edge control. Each sponsor presented a fashion show with a different theme where the models slayed!
Grenadian beauty Aria Mary Francis got in formation as she and the other models for Design Essentials declared a war on dryness. Designer Samantha Black sent her Sammy B Designs down the runway on digital influencer models like Ijeoma of Klassy who was impeccably styled in head to toe royal blue for Dark & Lovely.
Tessa of Afroista had the crowd going as she strolled down the runway without a care in the world allowing her beauty to lead the way while Sunita of Sunitav glowed in her bronze hued garment.
Official Social Media Hostess Christina flicked it up at the GIF generating photo booth.
She even invited myself and LoveBrownSugar community manager Savonne Anderson along for the fun.
One of my favorite parts of the evening was when Texture Media President and Co-Founder issued a heartfelt thank you to the evening’s sponsors stating that “so many little girls will feel their beauty is validated because of this show”.
Fashion week is not necessarily a beacon of inclusion so this sentiment was one I could definitely relate to. As Christina wrote in her post on “The Truth About Fashion Week” this industry isn’t always pretty but the energy in the room that evening was nothing short of breathtaking. If we want diverse images out there we have to create them and with the help of exclusive sponsors like Target Style events like #TextureOnTheRunway do just that. Like the great Diahann Carroll once said “If you’re not invited to the party, throw your own”.
