Why I Created #BrownGirlsLovePower Day

I know I’ve been a little MIA here on the blog recently but I promise it’s for good reason. Amidst the craziness of the holiday season, I’ve also been very hard at work pulling together details for the very first event of its type I have EVER produced – BrownGirlsLove POWER Day. Earlier this year (around February 2015), the LoveBrownSugar team and I embarked on the creation of a brand new community called BrownGirlsLove.

It started out as a street style series here on LoveBrownSugar, then it morphed into an Instagram community @BrownGirlsLove (now at nearly 8K followers, less than a year in!). From there, it became a brunch series that started off just as a 6 year anniversary celebration for LoveBrownSugar.com in August 2015 and then due to popular demand, it expanded into a brunch tour with stops in DC and Philadelphia this year.

Needless to say, the BrownGirlsLove brand has grown exponentially in a very short amount of time and it is all based around empowering and inspiring women of color to dream big. While LoveBrownSugar has always been a style and beauty platform to inspire women of color to embrace what makes them different and accept their unique beauty, BrownGirlsLove takes it a step further by empowering women to create their own personal brands and build their own wealth through entrepreneurship.

So I know what you may be thinking:

“Ok but why girl? Why you doing all this?”

The answer is simple. Because I want us to win. All of us. The most powerful thing I’ve ever done in my life, right after giving birth to my baby girl, is walking away from my full-time job to pursue entrepreneurship.  It has also been the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Building up my personal brand so I could get to a point where quitting my job was an option, was a hard task in and of itself. But developing the discipline and skills necessary to thrive as an entrepreneur is a day to day journey that never ends. Even though it’s not easy, it’s one of the most liberating things I have ever done. It has allowed me the freedom and flexibility to make my dreams come true and to live life on my own terms.

I want more people like YOU to experience that. So on Saturday, January 9th, I’m bringing together some amazing and incredibly talented experts in various fields to teach women like you how to win in career, in entrepreneurship and in life. Check out some of our experts and the workshops they will be teaching HERE.

I know what else you may be thinking:

“Girl. $99? How, Sway?”

The event is taking place at an incredible creative work space in midtown Manhattan called OFFSITE.

I’m a strong believer that your environment really sets the tone for your success. When my office space is messy, I can’t think straight. So I searched high and low to find a beautiful space that would allow the creativity to flow and that would accommodate all you lovelies for fun activities as well as workshops.

To put it simply, event space in NYC (and anywhere for that matter) costs money. In fact, the event is costing us much more than the $99 ticket price we’re charging. But we believe in this day. We believe in YOU. And we wanted to make this event affordable for you but still pay the bills.

For your $99 investment, you’re getting all this:

– personal access to 6 amazing workshop presenters and experts in their field to answer your pressing questions

– complimentary lunch, beverages and snacks throughout the day

– a keynote panel discussion featuring myself and 3 other outstanding brand-builders and entrepreneurs giving away their success secrets

– a super swagged out BrownGirlsLove branded TOTE bag filled with free beauty products, magazines & special gifts (you may get a Pattie Pie – don’t sleep!)

– the keys to unlocking your potential in 2016 (priceless or nah?)

  1. I think that’s a great idea from DeAndrea! There are lots of fashionistas I know in Houston that would love an empowering event like this.. In other cities too I bet. Easier said though; thanks for putting it together nonetheless for NYC.
