LBS Beauty Review: Fashion Fair Cosmetics Fall 2014

fashion-fair-fall-2014

One collection that I’ve been obsessed with this fall is the Fashion Fair Cosmetics Fall 2014 collection. Fashion Fair is the brainchild of Johnson Publishing Company (the same company that owns EBONY Magazine) and their collection is geared specifically towards catering to women of color. What I love about this collection is that the colors are pigmented but not too overpowering and there are some really complimentary colors for deeper skin tones like mine.

I started out with their eyeshadow collections. I have pretty large eyes and eyelids so MUAs I’ve worked with are normally pretty excited to play around with them. I, on the other hand, am not the most skilled at making them look amazing so I look for eyeshadows that pack pigments that are easy to blend and require minimal application.

My favorites from the collection are Apricot Spice (the perfect orange-tinted gold), Plum Sunset (the perfect fall purple with a hint if gold shimmer)  – which pairs really nicely over Apricot Spice, and Ginger Snap (a shimmery brown and the perfect nude shadow for brown girls).

Apricot Spice has to be my absolute fave of all. It’s such a nice golden shade that compliments my skin.

I layered all three together in the look you see above. Ginger Snap as a base. Apricot Spice as a highlight on the brow bone and the inner lid and Plum Sunset in the creases and out. Love these! Some of the other eyeshadow colors include Jade Onyx (a deep green with metallic shimmer), Sage Mist (a sheer platinum grey color which goes nicely as a highlight for Jade Onyx) and Iced Blush (a pinky platinum, great as as a brow bone highlight).

Next on to my faves – the lipsticks! What I look for in a great lipstick is high pigment, long wear and particularly in the fall/winter months – moisture! Matte lippies are amazing for long wear but they can be way too harsh on my dry lips during the winter.

Fashion Fair lippies are non-drying and enriched with vitamins and emollients to soften lips.

They come in a wide range of colors with nice bold pigments.

My favorites from the collection are as follows:

fashion-fair-bordeaux

Bordeaux (buy it here) – A deep wine color and the perfect deep fall red. I’ve been wearing this EVERYWHERE.

fashion-fair-sweet-maple-lipstick

Sweet Maple (buy it here) – The perfect neutral lippie for brown girls. It has a slight golden shimmer which is nice.

fashion-fair-moroccan-spice

Moroccan Spice (buy it here) – A punchy & daring orange. If you recall my How To Wear Orange Lipstick post you remember that I struggled with this one. I really like Moroccan Spice because it’s fun but isn’t over the top.

fashion-fair-spicy-plum

Spicy Plum (buy it here) – Easily my favorite deep purple lip of the season. I sang its praises in our Ultimate Purple Lipstick Guide for Brown Girls. It’s creamy and moisturizing, opaque, rich in hue and compliments many skin tones.

If your skin is deeper in tone than mine, you should totally check out this review of the collection from The Style and Beauty Doctor.

Overall I’m really pleased with this collection. If you guys end up trying it out, let me know! Would you try any of these? Have you? Leave a comment below and let me know!

  1. Fashion Fair is so under-rated. It definitely needs more love from women of color. I’m not complaining though because it is the hidden gem for brown girls who are into makeup. I definitely have to check out the fall collection as those dark and golden hues are just calling my name!!

    1. Definitely underrated. Before I got this collection, I’d only tried their Sam Fine collaboration of eye shadows and a few lippies. But I really love this collection, such great colors for brown girls.
