LBS Runway Report: Tadashi Shoji Fall/Winter 2014

Tadashi Shoji - NYFW CollageThe polar vortex – or wicked low-number temperatures that force fashionistas to layer – is dictating wardrobes this winter. It appeared like winter had won; skirts and dresses were abandoned in favor of fabric that protects the knees from the blistering chill. Seasoned designer, Tadashi Shoji, is changing that narrative. The reintroduction of the embellished, ankle-length dress offers wardrobe versatility to the women braving harsh winter winds for the love of fashion.

Tadashi Shoji’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection is a welcomed shift in evening wear attire. Heavier fabrics, like velvet, and looser silhouettes dominated the catwalk, offering a welcome reprieve from the sheath and lace peddled in previous seasons. The “mystery of romance and yesteryear” inspired this collection, and it is the cardinal theme. Every gown is delicate and ideal for women that spend their evenings in museums, art galleries and chic soirees.

Blood reds, rich cobalt, ivories and blacks offered the traditional winter palette, but distinctive embroidered patterns elevated Shoji’s vision. A Victorian flair was evident throughout Shoji’s collection. It’s stitched into the long sleeves, ruffled necklines and cascading trains.

I am especially fond of Shoji’s dazzling cape. The bold hue combined with the contrasting prints is ideal for a woman seeking an alternative to the traditional winter overcoat.

Models donned strategically tousled tresses and bare faces, which definitely kept the attention on the gowns. Though she wasn’t present at the show, Octavia Spencer must don one of these gowns on her next red carpet appearance. A Tadashi Shoji woman will keep those heavier fabrics for next winter; layer with a mixture of ankle and knee-length pieces; and embrace funky necklines, sleeves, and bodices.
