LBS Runway Report: Rebecca Minkoff Fall/Winter 2014

Rebecca Minkoff - NYFW CollageI squeal with delight each time I’m tasked with recapping a Rebecca Minkoff collection e.g. I’m squealing right now. Rebecca Minkoff is still a newbie to Lincoln Center; her first collection was unveiled at the fashion mecca in 2011. Yet, she navigates complex fashion themes like a veteran.

Fashion is circular. Trends aren’t reserved for singular seasons, so there was no shock value attached to Minkoff’s reintroduction of the masculine-meets-feminine motif. Acclaimed artist Frida Kahlo wasn’t Minkoff’s muse this season, but her insistence on redefining femininity was channeled through the models decked in boxy, loose-fitting coats; knee-length skirts with angular hems; tees emblazoned with bold words like snob; and furs designed to contrast plain blouses and jeans.

Rebecca Minkoff’s ode to menswear was a brazen shove to those who create perimeters of acceptable femininity. Models donned bold, berry-colored lips and wispy styles, including a throwback Halle Berry 90’s cut, to further sell the idea that masculinity isn’t reserved for men.

In contrast to Minkoff’s spring/summer palette, the tomboy-meets-snob collection relied on traditionally-masculine hues, like navy, wine reds and charcoal grays. Pinstripes were also prevalent on the catwalk.

Pop and country singer, Carrie Underwood, bopped her head to the sounds of British pop-rock band Alunageorge as she indulged in the collection from the front row.

Masculine-meets-feminine is a recycled trend, but Rebecca Minkoff elevated androgyny with her insistence on balancing the two.
