3 Reasons to Watch the 2015 Black Girls Rock Awards

Every year I make time out of my busy schedule to sit down and either watch or attend the Black Girls Rock! awards ceremony. I’ve attended three times over the course of my career and have watched it air on BET Network every single year. It is such an empowering and encouraging awards ceremony. It’s all about women of color, young and old, their contributions to the community and groundbreaking actions that push society forward in one way or another. Here are three reasons you MUST watch Black Girls Rock on Sunday, April 5th at 7pm EST:

1. The First Lady

If you don’t watch it for any other reason, watch Black Girls Rock because of Michelle Obama. This year, our First Lady makes an appearance (and I can attest that she stayed for the entire show!) to say a few words about the importance of the Black Girls Rock Awards and also to congratulate the young women who are making a difference (M.A.D. Girls) and who were honored during the awards.

It means so much to me and I’m sure to so many others that Michelle Obama found the time to attend BGR and encourage us to continue making strides as black women. She gave such a touching speech and just seeing her there was encouraging. Michelle Obama had many obstacles to overcome to attain the education she received and the accolades she received, even before becoming First Lady. She’s truly a black girl who rocks.

2. The Guest Performances

Everyone loves an incredible music performance. The musical guests that perform during Black Girls Rock are nothing short of amazing.

Ciara

Artists like Jill Scott and Erykah Badu (my faves!) sing uplifting songs of power. Songstresses like Faith Evans and Fantasia take us straight to church. Ciara sang from the heart and gave the diva fan a run for its money. I mean, every guest performer had something special to offer. Not to be missed!

3. The Fashion

People really showed out for Black Girls Rock on the white carpet. The looks from the presenters to the hostesses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King – to the honorees were flawless! Some of my favorite looks of the night include Janelle Monae‘s black and white ensemble, Tracee Ellis Ross’ closing white dress, Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s beautiful bodycon ensemble and of course First Lady Michelle Obama’s darling white frock.

Whatever you do tonight, set your DVRs and tune into BET Network at 7pm EST/6pm CT for Black Girls Rock! I’ll be live-tweeting tonight beginning at 7pm so be sure to follow me @LoveBrownSugar on Twitter to chat all about it. For more information and for behind-the-scenes action, head to BET.com
